Melbourne Food

Melbourne, Australia is known for its rich diversity of food outlets offering different ethnic cuisines. We had the opportunity to try out many types of food during our visit.

The best place to visit is Victoria Market (QVM).  It’s marvellous savoring nanchos at Pide Bread Bakery. The nanchos are served with tomatoes, salsa, melted cheese, sour cream and guacamole.

Mekong at Swanston Street is the place to get Vietnamese food. A simple meal of pho (beef noodle soup with fresh raw beansprout and selasih leaves) and rice paper rolls is good value for money. This restaurant is usually crowded with students most of the day.

Restaurants and cafes serving Greek food are located on Lonsdale Street. Stalactites Restaurant with a cave decor is the place to enjoy the food. You can see the chicken and lamb being grilled the minute you walk-in. This place is very popular with the locals. We had a selection of dishes for sharing – love the Lamb Souvlaki (Greek version kebab). For dessert, it is hard to argue with their Greek coffee and Baklava which has a sweet mixed nuts filling. The taste of the coffee is new to us.

A long walk exploring the Southbank and waterfront had us stopping by at Greco European Grill @ Crown. The vast selection of cakes displayed here are so tempting and we had our palates sweetened with a slice of coffee toffee cake. This outlet serve Giancarlo coffee. Prices here are higher as it reflect the fact that you are at The Crown.

As for a simple Chinese meal, Rice Bar charms with its serving of food with reasonable price and huge portion. Hot Chinese tea is provided free and is served in a thermos flask.

Had roast beef sandwich in Grind In The City which is located on one of Melbourne’s trendy chick alleys. The alley is dotted with many small food outlets and one can find all sorts of snacks here. Managed to grab a small table on the pavement and enjoyed a sandwich paired with a cup of coffee.
