*** Update:  Kozue has closed

My first post for the New (Niu) Year 2009! Finally settled back into routine after days of eating & celebrating…

I’m sure the majority of you had a dining experience in Gurney Plaza, Penang, no matter if it was Nandos, Manhattan Fish Market, Food Loft or something else. However, if you are craving for Japanese food of a different kind compared to Sakae Sushi or Sushi King, perhaps you can head over to Kozue Japanese Restaurant that sits on the 3rd floor of this shopping complex. This new outlet, which is situated just beside Kim Gary HK Cafe, opened in December last year and has a nice water feature at the entrance.

The colourful menu shows a lot of variety ranging from tempura to sushi and udon and has the descriptions of all the dishes. With just the two of us, hubby and myself went for a light meal.

A food trip this time around across the bridge took us to Nibong Tebal, Penang. We patronized this old style kopitiam Lim Aik Chew. This place is known for its fresh large prawns, and is popular among the tourist and locals alike.

Top of the menu was the prawns, of course! These famous prawns comes in several sizes, and subsequently with different prices. Their signature cooking method of these prawns is the Dried Curry, although there are other methods as well.

I am sure many of you have eaten Penang Hokkien Mee as it is one of the favourite hawker food in Penang. However have you ever had pork knuckle (tu kar bak) with your steaming bowl of Hokkien Mee?  If not, then hop over to the stall located in Presgrave Street (Sah Tiau Lor – 3rd Street) which serves this tender pork knuckle meat. The tender meat is only sliced out from the drum when required to maintain its moist meaty texture.

This stall does have a varieties of other add-on (kae liau) ingredients such as intestines (hoon chiang), spare ribs, boiled pig skin, roast pork and fishball. Among my must-haves every time I pay a visit are the pork knuckle, intestines and pig skin!

*** Update:  Young Heart has closed

Recently, I was invited by Ann Kee of Young Heart Restaurant at Pulau Tikus to a food testing session as they are launching their Chinese New Year Special Dishes. Together with a group of food bloggers, we visited this restaurant located on Cantonment Road. I truly enjoyed the food of my last visit to this restaurant with my family.

This restaurant with its motto; The Fragrance of the Refreshment comes from the Heart has been around since 2005, emphasizes on simple dishes that do not reliant much on extra artificial flavoring.

Dome Card

Posted by: CK Lam    in Cafe, Penang, Western Cuisine

Just came across some surprising news that Dome Cafe has discontinued their Dome Card with effect from 10th January 2009 as they are introducing new campaigns and promotions for this new year.

Card holders of their loyalty card have until 15th April 2009 to redeem all the bean points at any Dome Cafe. So, everyone, do check your bean points and redeem them before the dateline. Being a card holder myself, I will definitely be dropping by Dome to do that and at the same time grab a bite of their famous pies.

For more details, check out http://www.domecafe.com.my/

Penang holds the treasure of wonderful hawker food, and this post is no exception. Hidden in the folds on Georgetown is a stall in Chulia Street selling the best deep fried snacks. This place, managed by a man with his two helpers, offer excellent fried goodies that are commonly available in dim sum shops. According to him, he has been selling this snack for almost twenty-eight years, with no sign of slowing down! I am going to highlight a few of my favourite items among the different varieties sold in this stall.

My first post of 2009!

To start off the year, we decided to dine at a new eatery recommended by my friend Liang, called Blue Reef. This restaurant is located in the folds of Lebuh Lembah Permai, Tanjung Bungah, Penang. It serves up fish dishes alongside other western food. As the restaurant has just started a few weeks ago, they kept the menu “light and easy.”  Among the items available currently are the fish, chicken and pasta.

The deco is simple and neat with indoor and outdoor seating’s too. We had ours outdoor as it was a pretty chilling and cool night.
