Penangites can look forward to new and fusion cuisines by the opening of Haven Delights at Penang Times Square in last March 2009. This restaurant serves a  combination of cuisines from  Japan, Korea, Shanghai and Hong Kong with a twist of fusion. The group of Penang Food Bloggers were invited to an evening to savor the  tantalizing fusion delights. The hearty meal was arranged by Criz, courtesy of the Managing Director, Mr Ng Boon Tong.

img_9452.jpg

The meal started off with the serving of the Cold Cuts of Hotzzz Abalone and Unagi Tofu (from the buffet menu). This cold dish comes with slices of Abalone with homemade spicy paste and eel sauce together with Grilled Eel on silky tofu in a sweet sauce.

The piece of unagi garnished with sesame seed, bonito flakes and spring onions tasted marvelous especially paired together with the plain tofu.

img_9474.jpgThe combination was simply delicious and  healthy

Chicken Ban Ban (RM10)  – Fusion Japanese fried chicken with egg in chef’s special mayo sauce. The deep fried chicken pieces were laid on a bed of lettuce and fried omelet. The taste of these chicken nuggets were brought to  another level when eaten together with the ideal combination of sweet sauce, mayonnaise and the wasabi sauce.

img_9479.jpg

Red Dragon Prawn with Jammy Sauce (RM20). The combination of the fried prawns and white dragon fruit with the jammy sauce was wonderful. All the fruits and ingredients lend a nice colour, appearance and lightly sweet and sour taste to the fresh prawns.

img_9486.jpg

Motoyaki Scallop (RM14)  – Scallops were grilled with homemade spicy mayo sauce and has a slightly smokey taste. I would recommended this dish to those who prefer a heavy sauce on their scallops. It’s served with shredded radish and lettuce. Under the ala carte, the serving portion would be different and comes in five pieces per serving.

img_9491.jpg

Korean Beef Kimchi (RM16) – This stir fried beef kimchi is one of the better ones that I had eaten. The kimchi prepared by the chef was very flavorful, it’s spicy enough for me and the pieces of beef were very tender.

img_9506.jpg
Fried homemade kimchi with beef slices

Lamb Teriyaki (RM18)  – Grilled lamb with herbs in homemade sweet sauce. It was wonderfully grilled on the outside but the inner part was slightly underflavored for me.

img_9508.jpg

Homemade Spicy Chicken (RM15) – Fried chicken with homemade spicy sauce was one of my favorite dish.  This flavorful dish has black beans, lemon grass and the curry leaves to enhance its taste. It’s best enjoyed with some cooked white rice.

img_9523.jpg

Shanghai Honey Spare Ribs (RM18)  – The plate of spare ribs with honey sauce turns out to be on the saltier side.

img_9529.jpg

CHEF’S SPECIAL SURPRISES

Tempura Cheese Maki (8 pieces @RM18 ) – A surprise dish of tempura unagi prepared by the executive chef with a pleasant dressing of creamy cheesy mayo sauce.

img_9540.jpg

We got the opportunity to try out two new items, Chicken Bomb which has an exiciting spicy filling of chicken, salmon and strong fragrant herbs proves not to be a favorite choice among the food bloggers. Still for those who are more adventurous, this is an item to try out.

img_9551.jpg

The other new additional item was the Hong Kong Style Wan Than Mee (RM22). The noodle and the full flavored soup goes hand in hand but the four big dumplings seems to fall short on its texture. I find the filling rather soft and mushy as I like those that are springy.

img_9566.jpg

The meal was rounded off with the Japanese Yaki Udon (RM12). This Japanese rice noodles was fried with cabbage, meat and lantern chili, served with bonito flakes. It was quite a big portion but surprisingly it turns out too watery or was it an improvised Yaki Udon by Haven Delights?

img_9580.jpg

Delightful Homemade desserts of Kuru Goma Ice Cream and Macha Ice Cream (both @RM8).  This is the first time I came across the serving of black sesame seed ice cream with crushed peanuts. Indeed new as most restaurants would serve it sprinkle with roasted black sesame seed instead.

img_9594.jpg

Between the two flavors, I personally like the Macha Ice Cream which has a stronger and bitter green tea flavor but not the accompliment round mochi which was a bit hard on the inside.

img_9591.jpg

For those who go for their ala carte dishes, there are more than 200 varieties to choose from. Daily buffet lunch and dinner (Eat All You Can) are also available, starting from 10.30am till 11pm at RM49.90++ per person (children 50% off) with a two hour dining time frame. At that price, I find it reasonable considering the amount of food that is served.

Man,im sure u r wrong. There s no such thing as copycat in a restaurant. It ultimately depends on the quality of the chefs n i feel the food here is exceptionally great.Maybe sometimes its too busy when we were there on weekends we need to wait a while but overall the food is good.Better than most of the restaurants that we had where the kitchen r manned by bangla or nepalis!!!
