Seafood at Kuala Sepetang – Restaurant Tepi Sungai

Kuala Sepetang (Port Weld) is a fishing village near Taiping and is famous for its fresh seafood and mee banjir udang. It is around twenty kilometers from Taiping town and roughly twenty-five minutes traveling time. We were in Taiping for the cheng beng and we took the opportunity to try out the seafood after reading about it in the Kwong  Wah Yit Poh. The quiet town of Kuala Sepetang was buzzing with excitement due to the coming Bukit Gantang by-election. The roads were packed with vehicles parking on the roadside which was lined and decorated with the flags and banners of all parties. FRU and police trucks were everywhere as well. What a timing indeed!

After maneuvering through the jam, we finally reached the Restaurant Tepi Sungai. Quite literally, as the restaurant is RIGHT beside the river! It is on the first floor of the building. The ground floor is the docking area for the fishing boats.

Beautiful scenery of the river would be heaven for photographers

During the heat of the by-election campaigning, coupled with the cheng beng crowd, many of the seafood were sold out. We were disappointed as we were looking forward for a variety of seafood. So we settled for whatever that was available. We starting the meal off with some boiled baby octopus. Very crunchy and fresh, excellent appetizer!

Just half way through the first dish, the waitress came by and asked us whether we wanted some  flower crabs. Amazingly, the crabs just came off the fishing boat which just docked! Talk about it being fresh, this is as fresh as can be! Throughout the meal, we saw many shipments and fishing boats docking at the various jetties. More of these captivating sights can be seen in my article in Penang365.com.

We had the flower crabs steamed in Chinese Wine, it was so fresh and indeed satisfactory!

The next on the list was the Steamed Assam Curry Fish, their signature dish. Their curry is very much unlike those that I have eaten in Penang. The gravy has finely chopped garlic, lemon grass, chili and shallots which are excellent to go with rice, lip smacking indeed!

The last two dishes was the Fried Mee and vegetable. Though the yellow mee was fried with only vegetable and prawns, surprisingly it was very flavorful and tasty. The blanched Choy Sum in oil and soy sauce was very fresh. I personally prefer if they opt out the fried shallots and less generous on the oil.

As a first-timer here, you may have some trouble finding the place. The picture below would help you to identify the restaurant, and do check out the Map Location, with the address and direction included at the end of the post. It would be wise to make a reservation to avoid disappointment, especially with the length of journey to get there.

There could only be one phrase to conclude the food at this restaurant, GOOD AND REASONABLE and this was also given the thumbs-up by Lilian of Malaysiabest. The total food bill came up to RM92.00 plus the fruit juices. As this was my first time visiting this town I truly enjoyed the scenery and of course the seafood. Do take some time off your schedule and plan a visit to this beautiful town. Anyone interested to organize a makan-makan trip there for the seafood and mee banjir udang?
