The Kay Nui Kou/Gai Dan Go (egg cakes) are baked in different shaped moulds and comes in two sizes. The larger flower shape cake comes with melon seeds sprinkled over the top. It smells good. I remember my grandmother loves this type of cake. They are available from 11am!

The cakes are left to bake in the oven. The larger flower shape ones need a longer baking time and hence specially cut paper is used to protect the sides of the cake from being over burnt.

Big Boys Oven – Glad you like those tarts.

Selba – There are many more old Chinese snacks. Will try to feature more of them in time to come.

New Kid On The Blog – Most people would make the kai dan kou themselves, the baked ones and even the steamed ones too.

foodbin – Try out these variety of biscuits when you are in Penang.

allie – Do go there early in the morning and wait around to see the biscuits being made…very interesting.

oh I am wondering if you are talking about the bakery beside a chicken rice stall. My mom likes to buy kai dan kou from that bakery.

People’s court and cintra street is full of hidden treasures isn’t it? I used to visit the ju char there when I was small. Not sure if its still there. Also, when you need salted fish, you can get ur supply of good quality salted fish (dan lau ham yu) from the distributor over there. And of course, not to mention the lemon drink just further down the street.

Sad to realise that they won’t be around for a very long time.
