See Kong Ooi Restaurant in Transfer Road Penang which specializes in Hainanese and Hokkien chu char dishes is fondly refer as Sai Kong Huin by most of the Penangites Hokkien. It has been around for several decades now, and is still going strong until today!

This post is a collection of my trips to this restaurant, so don’t be shocked by the amount of food! I’ve made the trip there several times with my family and food bloggers BBO, Lingzie, Ken and NKOTB.

Located along the roadside of Jalan Mount Erskine Penang is a small hawker food center.  This food center nearby Fettes Park has most of its stalls sheltered from the afternoon sun by some makeshift tents and shady trees.

The popiah (spring roll) sold in one of the stalls there is slightly different from the regular popiah. Besides all the main ingredients this version comes with crab meat. So far, I have only come across this place and the stall in Padang Brown Hawker Centre using this ingredient.

Continuing with my Malaysia International Gourmet Festival 2009 food journey, I had the privilege to observe first hand preparation of dishes at Lai Po Heen. This award-winning Chinese restaurant at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur serves classic Cantonese cuisines, specializing in fresh traditional delicacies and contemporary dim sum assortments.

Besides Pacifica Restaurant, Lai Po Heen is also one of the participating restaurants under the MIGF 2009 which is running throughout the entire month of October.

MIGF at Pacifica, Mandarin Oriental Hotel_158

Pacifica is a fine dining restaurant in the posh Mandarin Oriental Hotel Kuala Lumpur, located within the vicinity of the premier Kuala Lumpur City Centre. This restaurant is one of the participating hotels in the currently on-going extravagant MIGF – Malaysian International Gourmet Festival 2009 which runs until the end of October.

Although I have stayed in Mandarin Oriental several times, however this was my maiden visit to the spectacular Pacifica.

The slogan above was printed on the menu when we visited Ah’ Basri Satay outlet last night. That slogan had all of us ranting…what a way to attract customers. This outlet is located on Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Sungai Ara. It is diagonally opposite the Fisherman’s Grill.

This place has its own unique variations of satay. We had some time selecting the type of meat to have as there were many varieties to choose from. They have even horse and ostrich meat for the more adventurous to try out.

Ah Chui Seafood  is a ‘chu char’ place tucked away in a row of shop houses facing the very busy Jalan Paya Terubong in Penang. This outlet specializes in seafood and is popular among the neighborhood!

Straight to the restaurant’s very own prawn fritters! The crispy deep-fried small prawns were served with chili sauce.

***Updated in October 2013 – The stall has since closed down

Peace & Joy Coffee Shop located in the corner of China Street and Queen Street Penang has a stall selling delicious curry mee! Generally, the curry mee soup itself is very flavorful, while the ingredients top it off beautifully. I noticed this coffee shop on my first chu char visit in the nearby Kedai Makanan Heng Kee.

The basic bowl of Curry Mee comes with ingredients of cockles, cuttle fish, pig jelly and taupok in rich gravy. You can have it with add-on ingredients as well! I love it either way.

Update:  Young Heart Restaurant has closed

Recently I was invited by a friend to do a food review of Young Heart Restaurant located in Pulau Tikus. In fact this is my second food review of them. Quite a number of Penang food bloggers have wrote about this restaurant lately promoting their Mid Autumn Special meal packages too.

At Young Heart, there are many types of beverages, tea, fruit juices, ice blended and flower tea. We were served with a hot tea drink followed by three refreshing cold drinks. The tea drink with Rosehip hibiscus and green apple – RM9 is a little sourish and is a good detoxifying drink, according to the owner.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Ice blended of mix berry vanilla – RM6 , Honey lemon with added Aloe Vera Jelly – RM6 and the Mix Fresh fruit juice consisting of dragon fruit, beetroot and milk – RM8.
