I had the pleasure of being introduced to a wonderful place for mee udang. The makan outing had brought us to the mainland. Located in Bukit Mertajam at Seberang Perai, this place is known as Selera Sri Tambang.

Chulia Street in Penang is not only known for its many budget hotels but also for inexpensive meals. It’s a popular dining destination with locals and tourists alike. At night, a section of the road is lined with stalls selling a good mix of street food. Do not make your choice immediately. Take your time and have a closer look at what’s on offer.

Worthy of mention are curry mee and wantan noodles. Springy wantan noodles are served with slices of char xiu (barbecued pork) and wantan (dumplings). For the curry mee, medium-sized fish ball is added to the standard ingredients of coconut milk, cockles, blood jelly, cuttlefish and tau pok (fried tofu). The slightly sweet coconut milk is flavoured with a blend of aromatic spices. Expect a queue as the curry mee is popular.

I had time to catch up with Taiwanese personality and celebrity Chef Chen Hong (陳鴻) during his recent trip to Penang, the island of delicious food. Popularly known as “Ah Hong”, he is now Penang Food Ambassador for Taiwan, since he was appointed by Penang State EXCO for Tourism Development and Culture, YB Danny Law Heng Kiang.

The Kota Selera Food Court adjoining Padang Kota Lama (Fort Cornwallis) is a favorite eating place for both locals and visitors to Penang. This spacious food court has several outstanding stalls doing brisk business with the lunch crowd looking for a quick bite.

One stall that stands out among the crowd is Makanan Hainan, serving local and Western fare, Hainanese style. Its small menu of 12 items includes the all-time favorites – chicken chop, fish and chips, prawn fritters, lamp chop and beef steak. Its popular all-day breakfast set is sausage and eggs.

The lamb chop (RM15) comes with two pieces of meaty lamb, pan-fried in a delicious flavour. The addition of fried onions gives a nice contrast of texture and sweetness, wonderfully complementing the tender meat, vegetables, french fries and baked beans.

I have been eating my way around several Bangkok’s restaurants and many street food stalls during my recent Bangkok trip. One tantalizing meal was at Patara Fine Thai Cuisine situated in Soi Thonglor 19, away from the bustling Sukhumvit 55.The dinner was a welcoming experience, featuring several well crafted traditional dishes with authentic taste in contemporary new arrangements.
