Chinese New Year Menu at Swez Brasserie, Eastin Hotel Penang

BY CK Lam

In conjunction with the upcoming February and Chinese New Year promotion, Eastin Hotel Penang has put its Chinese Odyssey and Chinese New Year’s Buffet at the Swez Brasserie. The festive menu crafted by chef Cheah Teik Huat and junior sous chef Ong Chin Hock offers a variety of authentic Chinese specialties to satisfy your taste buds.

The best dish to start the meal is the fresh salmon Yee Sang. This dish enjoyed only during the Chinese New Year is a colorful temptation, with piquant pairing of tangy and appetizing sauces with various ingredients.

Other appetizers on the menu include the jellyfish and spring rolls. The roasted duck rolled with spring roll skin and mix vegetables are great but tend to get soggy after awhile.

Marinated jellyfish and shredded chicken comes with a light sauce balance between spicy and sweet.

The main dishes include chicken, fish, prawns and greens. The nutritious double boiled black chicken soup comes with snow pears, red dates and Chinese herbs. According to Chef Choy, this comfort soup will be rotated with the double-boiled black chicken with cordyceps and ginseng.

The seabass is done with simplicity, steamed in superior sauce. Other dishes include the   braised Chinese cabbage with fat choi black moss and dried oyster, and stir-fried tiger prawn with golden pumpkin sauce.

The buffet also includes desserts, with double-boiled papaya with fresh milk and baked mandarin orange cheese cake. While the cheese cake is creamy with slight tanginess, the double-boiled papaya dominated by ripe papaya and milk is overcooked with curdling texture.
