Diners embarked on a classical music evening and indulged in a feast of fine cuisine and vintages at the 1885 Musical Soiree. The event was made possible through the support from the prestigious Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang (E&O) and Mr Martin Rutherford.
The musical performance at the elegant 1885 opened with a short speech by Mr Martin Rutherford, which was followed by performances by pianist Zhang Chi, soprano Teresa Ong Geok Theng and tenor Sean Ooi.
Among the picks of classical music for the first session was II ba cio, which celebrate the beauty of lovers. The number was performed by Teresa. Her voice blends in well with the music which charmed the guests. This beautiful lady who grew up in Penang got her double degree in Commerce and Music and has been invited for performances by famous soprano Linda Thompson and Camela Losinno.
Another great work for the evening was Liu Yang River, a Chinese folk song. The beautiful musical number with folk melodies and rhythms was performed by Zhang Chi. Hailing from Nanjing, he has been performed in many parts of Europe and China.
The collections in the third session include The Prayer. Teresa Ong and Sean Ooi performed this number which brought sweet smile to many guests. Penang-born Sean started taking piano lessons since he was nine and has completed his ABRSM with good honors.

The event allows guests to enjoy classical music between courses. Guests were treated to the Trio of Appetizers, a plate of Hokkaido Scallop Tataki, Citrus Mango Salsa, Foie Gras Terrine, Cinnamon Brioche, Vichyssoise, and Norwegian Salmon Tartar. Many adored the dish which was packed with multiple flavorful ingredients.
The main dish was the Pan Seared Chilean Cod Fish & Poached Jumbo Prawn, brought to the table with Chick Pea Pure, Semi Dried Tomatoes and Fresh Basil Sauce. Every mouthful yields freshness of seafood.
The Trio of Dessert with a line-up of Valrhona & Almond Chocolate Cannoli, Chantilly Cinnamon Mango and Bavarois Berry Lava Cake was a sheer indulgence. The dessert was heartily enjoyed with freshly brewed coffee.
Wines served with the dishes include Hole In The Water Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and the Matua Valley Marlborough Pinot Noir. The appetizer was paired with the white, and the main dish rounded up with the red.
It was an enjoyable evening with fine food and classical music that tickled the palate and ears. According to Eileen Chong (Communications and Public Relations Manager), there would be a total of five different performances during each year. Dates and details will be announced soon.
