Wirra Wirra Wine Dinner at Vino Vino Bistro

BY CK Lam

The Wirra Wirra Wine Dinner hosted by Vino Vino Bistro had many looking closely at the Wirra Wirra wines from McLaren Vale in South Australia. On hand sharing more about the selection of wines was Sam Temme, international sales manager for Wirra Wirra.

To start off the evening, we were offered a glass of 2013 The Lost Watch Riesling from the RGT Collection. The riesling with apple and zesty lemon finish from the region of the Adelaide Hills shows its best when perfectly chilled.

Next, we were poured a glass of Scrubby Rise Unoaked Chardonnay 2013. The wine with Chardonnay fruit flavours is young and refreshing, displaying hints of tangy nectarine and lime. One cannot help to appreciate it more when it gets a bit warmer. The wine gets rounder in taste and went well with the simple smoked duck salad prepared with fresh greens, rich duck breast and light seasoning.

From the RGT Collection, we savor two Shiraz – 2011 Catapult McLaren Vale Shiraz and the 2011 Woodhenge McLaren Vale Shiraz. The medium bodied Catapult with velvety texture was more approachable and affordable. We enjoyed this red with the gorgeous grilled slipper lobster, accompanied with maguro nuta ae (tuna sashimi with vinegar miso sauce).

Also from the RGT Collection was the 2011 Woodhenge McLaren Vale Shiraz. This elegant deep red wine with aromas of blackberry, black pepper, liquorice and subtle spicy vanillin oak was paired with the meat platter. Vino Vino Bistro makes the meat platter with lamb, beef and pork fillet steak, served with creaminess from the mashed.

The lamb, and beef was excellent as compared to the pork. The accompanying sauce with hint of wasabi complemented the meat.

Also paired with the meat platter was the 2011 RSW McLaren Vale Shiraz, a beautiful red wine made with classic grape varieties from 50 to 80 years old vineyard.

Matured in French oak barrel for 22 months, this red with intense aromas of plum and black cherry, notes of dark chocolate and a subdued spice offers a long finish.

A glass of fine ruby port and a lovely piece of cake with ice-cream cap the wine dinner.
