New Specials at Miam Miam, Gurney Paragon Penang

BY CK Lam

Miam Miam with a menu of food and desserts to match, is a popular dining place in Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang. Since its opening in 2013, the French cum Japanese Restaurant has packed in diners with its gradual add-on of new creations.

The owners have recently stepped up with a new set of dishes. There are four savory dishes to choose from: Bacon Wrapped Chicken, Riz Miam Miam, Riz Teriyaki and Katsu Pork Pasta.

The Bacon Wrapped Chicken served with a small serving of greens gets off for a start. There are two skewers with three rolls each of chicken meat wrapped with bacon – one marinated with miso paste, and another with cajun and teriyaki sauce. Done up with white and black sesame-sprinkled goodness, each lightly charred roll imbued with a smoky sweet note is good in one big bite.

Miam Miam serves two comforting baked rice bowls – Riz Miam Miam and Riz Teriyaki.

Riz Miam Miam is served up with bacon slices‬, ‎shimeijim mushrooms‬, onsen egg, eggplant, baby spinach, tomatoes, pork frankfurter and Japanese rice‬. Rich textures from the ingredients similar to their signature MM Spaghetti melded together nicely, making it a comforting dish. I recommend a sprinkling of Japanese chili flakes over the dish, which adds a little heat.

Riz Teriyaki is another rice bowl, with juicy chicken teriyaki, bacon slices, leeks and plenty of seaweed with Japanese rice, garnished with sesame seeds. The pan seared chicken thighs are dressed up with a sweetened premium teriyaki sauce.

Also on the menu is the Katsu Pork Pasta – a dish with Japanese & Mexican flavors.

The springy bite pasta is cooked together with button mushrooms in imported pomodoro sauce, and served with a huge piece of pork cutlet. The pork cutlet marinated in cajun spices, breaded and deep-fried, is slathered with the restaurant’s own tonkatsu, giving the meat another flavor dimension.

Leave room for some desserts as they are the best thing you could have after a meal. Besides its already popular Miam Miamliciousness souffle, parfaits and French toasts, Miam Miam now features the popelini, a popular French classic of mini cream puffs.

I am happy to see little cuties of cream puffs in a plate of eight emerging on the table decorated with crusty chocolate topping and fruits. The only difference between each of them is the velvety cream filling. There are the rapsberry, peanut butter, matcha, strawberry, blue berry, nutella and passionfruit flavors. The latter with its light and bright fruit flavor is my favorite.

This new specials also encompasses house-made beverages, and they are the Nutella Smoothie (RM15), and the Limethe Noir (RM13).

No nutella-loving friend could possibly be disappointed with the creamy Nutella Smoothie, but for me, the heavy meal is better paired with the Limethe Noir, a fresh and flavorsome soda served with lime juice, wedges of lime, mint leaves and black Thai sugar syrup.
