Bagels are a popular bread product in western countries. Shaped by hand into the form of a ring, the bagel is first boiled and then baked. Sesame seeds and poppy seeds are the most common toppings.
Many enjoy this “O” shaped bread fresh or toasted with a spread of butter or cream cheese and fillings of seafood, meat or egg.

China House is one of the busiest dining and lifestyle outlets within the Unesco heritage zone of George Town. Occupying three refurbished colonial shop houses with facades facing Beach Street and Victoria Street, China House offers a great dining experience. There are five different dining areas besides a wine store, art spaces and a venue for live shows.
The cafe serves all-day breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Diners can whet their appetite at the casual cafe Kopi C, formal dining room of BTB Restaurant, an outdoor courtyard, the Canteen & Bar and a private dining room.
At Kopi C, there are many dishes to savour alongside an array of rich cakes and pastries displayed on a long table at its bakery. The place has since received many comments on being the haven for cakes.

Golden Crust, a kiosk with its core of freshly baked hand made gourmet pies, tarts & quiches opened recently in Gurney Plaza. There is a range of fillings and crust including crust pastry and puff pastry. I was overwhelmed by the selections on the menu.
The cottage pie is rich, with a filling of meatiness, green peas, corn, carrots, blend of fresh herbs and a layer of creamy mashed potatoes. The combination of flavors are well-balanced. It is well received by customers, especially for those who like the smooth texture potato with light gravy.

Leong Chee Kee biscuits located on the ground floor corner of the People’s Court off Cintra street was known for its traditional Cantonese wedding biscuits. The business set up by Leong Chee Kee has since been taken over by his son, Leong How Keng.
On my visit to this biscuit shop, I had the opportunity to watch the owner make the Chinese snacks of Coconut Tarts, Khay Nui Ko/Gai Dan Go (egg cakes) and Hup Toh Soe (Chinese walnut cookie)…perfect teatime treats.

Yummy coconut tarts fresh right out of the oven! Fantastic!

Four Leaves Bakery is located right inside Gama Supermarket Penang. All the items are baked in the little kitchen on the premises. Our whole family have been buying bread from this bakery since a long long time. They have a wide selection of delicious breakfast/teatime favourites and we have tried most of them. My youngest son’s favourite is off course their EPI.
Wondering what is EPI???
It is basically baguettes shaped like leaves…. with ham and garnish with a bit of pepper.
Quoting my son on the taste of the EPI: chewy yummy snack…been eating it for 10 years steady and its still fantastic…just take your time to chew it as can be a bit tough.
Fresh butter rolls and mini butter tops.

This bakery outlet has stayed on for so many years. I am sure those that have patronise this bakery will agree with me that their items are really nice although their prices are slightly above average.

The first meal to start the day is having breakfast and what’s more with bread products. We find it nutritious and it goes well with various spreads, both sweet and savory or with meats, cheeses, and vegetables.
Recently we found out about Rainforest Bakery, located along Chulia Street in George Town, Penang.
All the bakery products are preservative free. The proprietor, Mr Tan Boo Geok and his wife is very friendly and goes to great length to share with the customers the different types of healthy and organic bread. The bakers are their twin sons, Jerry and Jesse.
There are abundant choices of bread made from rye and seeded products too. Do check out the many choices – Ciabatta (RM6.30), English Bloomer (RM4.20), Poppy Seed Bloomer (RM5.20), English Muffin (RM4.50), Volkron Brot (RM8.80), French Baguette (RM3.90), Cinnamon Roll (RM1.70), English Scone (RM5) and Foccacia (RM3.70).
Nowadays we have been patronising this bakery whenever we need to replenish our supply of bread.
