For those looking to indulge in international fare and treats fused with Penang’s thriving culinary pulse, do make a visit to DownTown Art Heritage Cafe.

The outlet on the corner of touristy Armenian Street and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling does a brilliant nasi ketuk, serving up the traditional Indonesian rice dish cook with local clitoria flower. There is a choice of Nasi Ketuk with Chicken Rendang or Nasi Ketuk with Grill Lemongrass Chicken.

The Nasi Ketuk with Chicken Rendang comes with delicious spicy slow-stewed chicken drumstick, spicy anchovy sambal, papaya & onion compote and crispy local prawn crackers.

The bustling stretch of Campbell Street in Penang has always been packed with shops dealing with Chinese dry product specialties and restaurants. The mix of restaurants include Il Bacaro, Tho Yuen, Toh Soon, Hameediyah, and Kedai Makanan Yee Heong.

In the last year, the neighbourhood has many new cafes like Sugar Honey Cafe, Moustache Houz, Kantan Cafe and The Safe Room. The Sugar Honey Cafe is known for its waffles and other light bites besides pasta and sandwiches.

If you are looking for new cafes to spice up your coffee break, you can do just that by visiting Moody Cow Cafe (MCC). Located along Transfer Road in George Town Penang, this cafe boasts big taste in cheesecakes.

Opened in November last year, the cafe set out in red and green offers a warm interior.

Nagore Square, a buzzy food scene in Penang is home to many food outlets. Conveniently sitting on the corner of the refurbished Chime Heritage building on nearby Jalan Bawasah is The Haven Harbour (HH). This double storey corner unit cafe with its white washed walls and spacious upstairs dining area is welcoming with modern day design and relaxing environment.

Andus Yeap takes care of the kitchen while Carine Lim is the lady behind the wide range of creative pastries and cakes. For freshness, only small patches of desserts are baked daily while the made to order signature desserts take 15 minutes of preparation.

Take your pick from the different types of chocolate desserts made with superior quality Callebaut chocolate products. Would it be the Poke Boule or the Chocolate Assiette? We had both choices.

The ball of Poke Boule with Frangelico infused lady finger coated with Belgian chocolate was served cold in a ramekin. Carine took it up a notch by adding nice sense of texture – fine lines of white chocolate and crisp peanuts. Recommended to go with a cup of Americano, the Poke Boule practically melts in the mouth. It brings back something memorable – roughly like eating rum ball.

Cafes grew rapidly in Penang for the past few years and is still growing. The latest on Chow Thye Road is Monkey Cup Cafe. Having opened over a few months, the corner unit cafe with its walls painted in grey got its name from the tropical pitcher plant – monkey cup.

DCOVA Cafe on Bishop Street in George Town Penang caters to a diverse downtown clientele of corporate types and town visitors. The cafe housed in the Logan Heritage Building takes over the space that was once Lighthouse Cafe. The all day dining cafe welcomes visitors with its food, cakes, tea and a vast selection of coffee.

We started exploring the several varieties of hot coffee drinks made using throwback coffee beans from Papa Pahleta. The throwback is a composition of Brazil Cerrado, Sumatra Ratawali Valley and Tobing Estate. I enjoyed the espresso solo, which gave satisfying flavors of dark chocolate.

George Town Penang is reputed with its many heritage shophouses with five foot pedestrian walkways. Many are familiar with these sheltered walkways which are popularly known as goh kaki 五脚基. It is not surprise having one of the cafes going after the name.

Goh Kaki located in two heritage shophouses on Bishop Street is a casual relaxing space. It is one of the several cafes in town that brings back childhood memories.

The drinks menu offers brewed local coffee, fresh juices, soothing teas and ice blended. Coffee choices on the menu include Kopi C, Kopi-O, Kopi and Chocolate Coffee, all served in porcelain kopitiam cups and saucer with flower motifs.

Goh Kaki offers customers the signature ‘Say No’ Chocolate Coffee with “old-school” chocolates wrapped in gold foil. The chocolate coins with the charm of yesteryear are still sold at some grocers.

Real Food Sonnentor Penang is a new cafe and grocery store located at Straits Quay in Tanjung Tokong. The corner lovely space previously occupied by Aseana is marking the beginning of a new meat-free concept cafe to Penang. The decor is modern and delightful, with indoor and alfresco dining.

The health driven menu offers dishes prepared without processed ingredients, artificial preservatives and trans-fat. The item worth trying is the Organic Pizza prepared without cheese. The thin crust ‘green’ pizza comes topped with homemade pesto sauce and organic seasonal vegetables – three types of mushrooms, tomatoes, pineapples, onions and olives. The pizza with balanced yet intriguing flavors can be shared or just eaten in lieu of a main course.

It is always nice to see my work in print. This time around my article was published in the Hong Kong Express’s airline UO Magazine, which covers lifestyle topics – travel, leisure, shopping, food adventure and people. The airline, a Hainan Airlines’ subsidiary company has opened a new route to Penang on 27 October 2013.

I was first approached by personnel from Ink, a Singpaore-based publisher to write a story on Penang’s Top10 Eating Experiences. The food story including colourful photos was eventually featured in the inaugural issue of the magazine (December 2013).

Managed by Zinc/InVision Hospitality, the mid-scale hotel offers convenient and comfortable accommodation for both holiday and business travellers. The cafe brightly decorated with artwork on the walls, and simple yet modern furniture is open from 7am to 11pm daily.  It occupies two separate floors, a space on the ground floor and a large space on the first floor.
