It is always nice to see my work in print. This time around my article was published in the Hong Kong Express’s airline UO Magazine, which covers lifestyle topics – travel, leisure, shopping, food adventure and people. The airline, a Hainan Airlines’ subsidiary company has opened a new route to Penang on 27 October 2013.

I was first approached by personnel from Ink, a Singpaore-based publisher to write a story on Penang’s Top10 Eating Experiences. The food story including colourful photos was eventually featured in the inaugural issue of the magazine (December 2013).

The hotel fuses 131 stylish guest rooms, a bar and the all-day dining Zest Cafe.

Traveling is also part of discovering new eating places. This second part of my Kuala Lumpur food article continues with many more interesting dining places.

It is an absolutely great meaty meal at El Cerdo located on Changkat Bukit Bintang. Together with some friends, we sampled El Cerdo’s notable dish of suckling pig and other dishes like Iberico ribs, sausage platter and seafood paella.

The half size piglet is priced at RM188. The waiter gestured us to cut the piglet with a plate. Not only is it a memorable experience for us but the food also delighted our taste buds. The suckling piglet done with amazingly crispy skin and soft meat with melting fat had everyone asking for seconds.

Among the choices of desserts, we had the raspberry sherbet and the rum and raisin ice cream. The latter is far better of the two.

Our trips to Kuala Lumpur had us visiting many places, savoring the city’s food and staying at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral. Recommended by friends Alison and Narelle, the hotel with a casual, hip vibe offers solid bed to help us sleep through the nights.

The hotel is a convenient place of accommodation, especially for those who do not have transport as it is located opposite the KL Sentral transportation hub.

Trendy restaurants are catching up steady in Penang and one new addition is Miam Miam. Located on the ground floor of Gurney Paragon Mall, Miam Miam Penang is a charming comforting dining place with lace pergola seating.

We were in hopes of a good lunch as Miam Miam’s claims to bring a menu with a variety of savories dishes and sweet treats inspired by culinary traditions from France and Japan.

Coffee drinking has taken over Penang, with the opening of many new places. One such outlet is Kaffa Espresso Bar, a Kuala Lumpur based vintage themed coffee bar, with its second outlet officially launched in Green Hall.

Invited guests were served with their favorite choice of coffee: mocha, chocolate, espresso and piccolo latte, with some choosing the salted caramel macchiato, which is a beautiful sight and delightful to sip on.

Just recently, we get the first taste of Rasa Deli’s croinuts, a delicious merge of croissant and doughnut. The deli at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang is making the croinuts, a version based on the cronuts created by New York-based chef Dominique Ansel.

“The croinuts are made of laminated dough and deep-fried. The soft and layered interior is filled with fresh tangy lemony flavored pastry cream and its exterior rolled with flavored sugar,” says executive pastry chef, Dino Wan Teik Boon.

The One located in Bayan Lepas, Penang is lined with massive rows of new shophouses. Most of the outlets are dedicated to food and beverage. Among them is Wheat Connection Bakery. Opened a few months ago, Nazeri Ismail is the proprietor and pastry chef in charge.

Many would be familiar with Nazeri, the former executive pastry chef at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang. He has created many cakes for the Penang state governor’s birthday celebrations and all are wonderful works of art.

“It has been a long baking journey of over 20 years and it is time I start my own bakery,” said Nazeri.

The locals in Penang, especially those living around the vicinity of Air Itam, Farlim and Paya Terubong no longer have to travel to the central Georgetown for a cup of gourmet coffee and food with the newly opened All Seasons Place. Located along Lebuhraya Thean Teik, this complex is a nice place to stop by for the weekend.

One place to enjoy a good cup of freshly brewed coffee is Coffee Elements. The cafe features order-at-the-counter service, and food delivered to the table.
