Bagels are a popular bread product in western countries. Shaped by hand into the form of a ring, the bagel is first boiled and then baked. Sesame seeds and poppy seeds are the most common toppings.

Many enjoy this “O” shaped bread fresh or toasted with a spread of butter or cream cheese and fillings of seafood, meat or egg.

Having afternoon tea at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa in Batu Ferringhi, Penang is a real indulgence. I remembered my first noteworthy exposure with Rasa Sayang’s afternoon tea at the Rasa Wing Lounge.

It came with a 3-tier plate rack, with cakes, scones accompanied with cream and jam along with savory treats. Until today, the tradition of afternoon tea is still observed in both the Rasa Wing Lounge and the Spice Market Cafe over at the Garden Wing.

China House is one of the busiest dining and lifestyle outlets within the Unesco heritage zone of George Town. Occupying three refurbished colonial shop houses with facades facing Beach Street and Victoria Street, China House offers a great dining experience. There are five different dining areas besides a wine store, art spaces and a venue for live shows.

The cafe serves all-day breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Diners can whet their appetite at the casual cafe Kopi C, formal dining room of  BTB Restaurant, an outdoor courtyard, the Canteen & Bar and a private dining room.

At Kopi C, there are many dishes to savour alongside an array of rich cakes and pastries displayed on a long table at its bakery. The place has since received many comments on being the haven for cakes.

At 42º La Boheme, we discovered new textures and flavours during our lunch visit. Opened since July, Mathieu Guegan and his wife Huvi have created a French cafe in a heritage house. Coupled with simple decorations and some old collectibles, the ambience is casual. The only visible sign of the cafe in bustling Jalan Sri Bahari, is the small wooden sign, 42º La Boheme, hanging on the front gate.

Mathieu, who also runs the kitchen, learnt to bake since he was 12 and has spent years working in some restaurants. He makes his own bread and desserts and offers lovely pastries, galettes and quiches. Besides the short and fresh menu, a variety of desserts can be found displayed at the counter. The chalkboard showcases a selection of pizzas available only on weekends.
