George Town Penang is reputed with its many heritage shophouses with five foot pedestrian walkways. Many are familiar with these sheltered walkways which are popularly known as goh kaki 五脚基. It is not surprise having one of the cafes going after the name.

Goh Kaki located in two heritage shophouses on Bishop Street is a casual relaxing space. It is one of the several cafes in town that brings back childhood memories.

The drinks menu offers brewed local coffee, fresh juices, soothing teas and ice blended. Coffee choices on the menu include Kopi C, Kopi-O, Kopi and Chocolate Coffee, all served in porcelain kopitiam cups and saucer with flower motifs.

Goh Kaki offers customers the signature ‘Say No’ Chocolate Coffee with “old-school” chocolates wrapped in gold foil. The chocolate coins with the charm of yesteryear are still sold at some grocers.

Our trips to Kuala Lumpur had us visiting many places, savoring the city’s food and staying at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral. Recommended by friends Alison and Narelle, the hotel with a casual, hip vibe offers solid bed to help us sleep through the nights.

The hotel is a convenient place of accommodation, especially for those who do not have transport as it is located opposite the KL Sentral transportation hub.

Coffee drinking has taken over Penang, with the opening of many new places. One such outlet is Kaffa Espresso Bar, a Kuala Lumpur based vintage themed coffee bar, with its second outlet officially launched in Green Hall.

Invited guests were served with their favorite choice of coffee: mocha, chocolate, espresso and piccolo latte, with some choosing the salted caramel macchiato, which is a beautiful sight and delightful to sip on.

The locals in Penang, especially those living around the vicinity of Air Itam, Farlim and Paya Terubong no longer have to travel to the central Georgetown for a cup of gourmet coffee and food with the newly opened All Seasons Place. Located along Lebuhraya Thean Teik, this complex is a nice place to stop by for the weekend.

One place to enjoy a good cup of freshly brewed coffee is Coffee Elements. The cafe features order-at-the-counter service, and food delivered to the table.

Instant noodle has come a long way for many of us. It is simple to make and inexpensive. This kind of comfort food seems to suit today’s lifestyle, and is gaining popularity in many eateries in town. And since we swear by this instant comforting fix at home, eateries out there are now offering this in their menu.

Stop by the small shed on Church Street Ghaut. Owner Ah Lai and his wife have been serving up this ‘comfort food’ for 30 over years from an unbelievably small kitchen. Popularly known as Under the Big Tree, the eatery is patronised by workers from the surrounding offices.

Bagels are a popular bread product in western countries. Shaped by hand into the form of a ring, the bagel is first boiled and then baked. Sesame seeds and poppy seeds are the most common toppings.

Many enjoy this “O” shaped bread fresh or toasted with a spread of butter or cream cheese and fillings of seafood, meat or egg.

Having afternoon tea at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa in Batu Ferringhi, Penang is a real indulgence. I remembered my first noteworthy exposure with Rasa Sayang’s afternoon tea at the Rasa Wing Lounge.

It came with a 3-tier plate rack, with cakes, scones accompanied with cream and jam along with savory treats. Until today, the tradition of afternoon tea is still observed in both the Rasa Wing Lounge and the Spice Market Cafe over at the Garden Wing.
