Coffee drinking has taken over Penang, with the opening of many new places. One such outlet is Kaffa Espresso Bar, a Kuala Lumpur based vintage themed coffee bar, with its second outlet officially launched in Green Hall.

Invited guests were served with their favorite choice of coffee: mocha, chocolate, espresso and piccolo latte, with some choosing the salted caramel macchiato, which is a beautiful sight and delightful to sip on.

The Japan Sweets Fair event held in Isetan KLCC in Kuala Lumpur is a sweet extravaganza, featuring lots of Japanese sweets. I had the opportunity to attend the fair which runs in the concourse floor from 18th October to 30th October 2013.

The event is capped off with the special appearance of Iron Chef Hiroyuki Sakai who specializes in French cuisine. Another special guests is none other than patissiers Chef Toshihiko Yoroizuka, who has made headlines for designing hats, bags, shoes and dresses that are not only good to look at but also good enough to eat.

From mid-October to December 2013, Dragon-i Group of Restaurants will be airflying the seasonal delicacy hairy crabs twice weekly from Yangcheng Lake located to the northeast of Suzhou, China.

Dragon-i seems to have the China’s most cherished crustaceans recipe for success, having offering the crustacean for the past five years. I had the pleasure of savoring the gentle crustaceans at the Dragon-i Hairy Crab Premium Set Menu Promotion Press Conference held at its Sunway Pyramid outlet.

The mooncake, a traditional delicacy for the Mid-Autumn Festival, has undergone an evolution in recent years in Penang. The fillings of the cakes are no longer just the usual lotus paste, but expanded with pricy ingredients and flavours, such as ginseng, bird’s nest, ice cream, cream cheese, dried scallops, goose liver and truffles.

These modern versions are often packed in elaborated presentable boxes. But here in Penang, traditional mooncakes remain as popular sellers.

Last July, many food and wine enthusiasts gathered at a wine dinner in the relaxed surroundings of Suffolk House with George Shinas of the Shinas Estate. It was an evening of great food accompanied by hand crafted wines from the vineyards of Victoria, Australia.

Winemaker George Shinas who is a court judge by profession in Australia’s Victoria Province provided some history to his wines which are cheekly named. The range included the Innocent (a Viognier), Verdict (Cabernet Sauvignon), Guilty (Shiraz), Executioner and Sweet Justice (Moscato), all with interesting images on the label.

Located adjacent to Gurney Plaza and G-Hotel, Gurney Paragon Mall houses several restaurants and cafes. One Italian chain restaurant that is making its debut in this mall is Italiannies. The restaurant provides diners with the option of dining in the large air-conditioned dining room, or in the alfresco area where they can enjoy the sea breeze.

All its outlets nationwide offer the same menu. Our dinner consisted of appetisers, pasta and pizza, and complimentary bread with vinegar and olive oil. As usual, the food is served in large portions.
