Penang is home to a few German restaurants, including the hardly touristy Lecker Ecke. Located on Burma Road, the quaint restaurant welcomes diners with simple and pleasant decor.

The restaurant’s wall is dominated by a chalkboard with daily specials. Owner cum chef Nicholas Cheng mentioned that he is sticking closely to the recipes used during his culinary career in Hamburg, Germany.  While pork and beef are the standard meaty selections, the menu also features poultry and seafood.

Conveniently located on the ground floor of Gurney Plaza shopping mall is Euro Deli Biergarten Penang. The restaurant, which opened in end of December 2011, is getting a lot of attention not only for its wide range of Swiss-German specialties but also its beer.

Euro Deli, a landmark brand which has been in our shores since 1991 had recently held a launching event at their Damansara Kim restaurant after undergoing some renovation. The outlet, now occupying two shoplots has a relaxed dining ambiance. On top of that, there is also a section selling its signature products such as sausages, cold cutlets and other products.

Last week, the Malaysian-German Society of Penang held their annual Christmas celebration and Bazaar  which is open to the public at their premises in Jalan Air Itam. Many programs were lined up for the event featuring the presence of  Santa Claus, piano performance,  story telling,  Christmas caroling and gourmet food.

Although there were no serving of turkey and Christmas pudding, they make it up by serving yummy smoked barbeque chicken and jumbo sausages. Potato salad and Sauerkraut made up the side dishes.

German food is hard to come by in Penang Island but lucky for us Penangites, we have the Ingolf’s Kneipe German Restaurant which serves delicious German food. This outlet is housed in the middle of a row of shophouses located opposite Copthorne Orchid Hotel in Tanjung Bungah.

Beer Cans, posters, sign boards and pictures of food/beer lined the wall and stairway. Beer drinkers can pick their choices of beer from the many beers on tap found in the bar area located on the ground floor.
This restaurant has a wide selection of food to offer to its customers. Hubby took the beef and pork patties covered with a dark rich sauce and served with creamy smashed potato, salad and mild mustard. The meat was tender and tasty (particularly the beef).
My Rindsrouladen (beef rolls) were wrapped up by bacon strips. There were three side dishes – fresh garden salad, creamy smashed potato and sauerkraut (sour cabbage). I love the taste of the sourish cabbage. It went well with the beef rolls which were braised with a flavorful dark brown sauce.
My son had the mixed grill served with potato wedges, garden salad and black pepper sauce. The mixed grill had a combination of pork, beef, lamb, sausage and bacon strip. The food portion was huge and tasty except for the pork – which was a bit tough and dry.

We wanted to try the desserts but were too full after such a heavy main dish. We will definitely visit this restaurant again.

BRAUN BUFFEL – the premium German designer and producer of leather goods and accessories. Recently I received a present with this distinctive bull logo.

Here is just a sneak peek of the good stuff. =p

The accessory that comes with this stylish leather bag is a silver bracelet with their silver signature bull and beautifully polished beads.

Art Design – On Trucks

   Posted by: CK Lam

I received these pictures of big trucks with trailers decorated with very nice cool designs from my friend, May Ooi . The designs of the products that they are hauling are painted on the sides and back of the trailer.

The first picture is a bottle of beer and it looks so real, like as if it is coming out from the side of the trailer.

The second picture is of a canvas tote bag. So chic and stylish. They even emphasis on the shoulder stripe.

The third picture showing Pepsi cases stacked on the ceiling of the truck. Wonder how they are able to stack them in this position????

The fourth picture shows another truck with its windshield facing the back and a driver painted in the driver’s seat looking back over his shoulder to appear like he is driving backwards. Will the vehicle following from behind get confused???

The fifth picture showing an aquarium with fishes swimming in it. It looks so real.

The sixth picture of a bookshelf with books lined up in it and a post-it-note with an advertisement on it too – probably for the company that sells the books.

The last picture showing the snack enjoyed by many people – Pringles Hot & Spicy. The “inside” of the trailer has the appearance of having been through a fire.

Actually they are not real photographs but digitally super imposed on to the truck for an art design competition held in Germany. The above seven designs were selected for the award, then implemented for real and shown during the award ceremony.

They do have a very imaginative and creative way of designing their products. It sure does attract everyone’s attention.
