Happy Mid-Autumn festival and happy mooncake feasting!

With the Mid-Autumn Festival just around the corner, a group of us had an enjoyable time savoring many baked and snowskin mooncakes at the mooncake tasting event hosted by Gurney Paragon Mall Penang.

We saw the introduction of the latest trends and new gourmet ingredients featured in mooncakes from Canton-i, The Baker’s Cottage, Casahana, Leong Yin, Foh San, Purple Cane, Fai Fong, Kum Lun Tai and Hong Kong Mei Xin.

Canton-i introduced the Frosty Skin Series made with six new flavors. Be prepared to pay RM28 for two pieces of their renowned Frosty Durian Musang King mooncake, made with aromatic and quality musang king durian filling. Also included is the Organic Charcoal Skin with Coffee Paste mooncake. I would have preferred if it comes with a stronger amount of coffee.

Premium grade lotus seed imported from Hunan, China is used in the baked Hong Kong White Lotus Paste mooncake with single yolk (less sugar). Canton-i got it right with the amount of sugar and delicate lotus paste.

The ribbon cutting ceremony of Edo Ramen at Gurney Paragon Penang on 11th April 2014 saw the presence of Sushi Kin President & COO, Mr Akihiko Hijioka. He was joined by Mr Khor Siang Gin, Managing Director of Hunza Properties Berhad.

Located on the east wing of the building, this outlet branching off from Goku Raku Ramen offers a fresh approach to ramen indulgence. “The handmade Tokyo-style ramen created by Chef Tetsuya Fukino features four choices of soups and two categories of toppings. The handmade Japanese wheat ramen is made fresh daily and is pleasantly firm,” said Hijoka.

Miam Miam Penang set up in Gurney Paragon has a reputation of serving fusion cuisine that incorporates both French and Japanese flavor.

Having garnered a following since its opening, the restaurant has recently launched a revised menu. Together with some friends, we revisit the restaurant. And while I can’t say I loved every aspect of Miam Miam main plates on my first visit, my experience on this visit is far different.

The locals in Penang, especially those living around the vicinity of Air Itam, Farlim and Paya Terubong no longer have to travel to the central Georgetown for a cup of gourmet coffee and food with the newly opened All Seasons Place. Located along Lebuhraya Thean Teik, this complex is a nice place to stop by for the weekend.

One place to enjoy a good cup of freshly brewed coffee is Coffee Elements. The cafe features order-at-the-counter service, and food delivered to the table.

Located adjacent to Gurney Plaza and G-Hotel, Gurney Paragon Mall houses several restaurants and cafes. One Italian chain restaurant that is making its debut in this mall is Italiannies. The restaurant provides diners with the option of dining in the large air-conditioned dining room, or in the alfresco area where they can enjoy the sea breeze.

All its outlets nationwide offer the same menu. Our dinner consisted of appetisers, pasta and pizza, and complimentary bread with vinegar and olive oil. As usual, the food is served in large portions.

Goku Raku Ramen brings their specialty Horikiri style ramen to their new outlet in Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang. Located on the east wing of the building, Goku Raku Ramen is the latest branch opened by the Texchem group in Penang.

The ramen comes with three types of soups – Tonkotsu (pork-based), Shoyu Tonkotsu (Japanese soy sauce) and Miso Tonkotsu. The freshly made broths are simmered for 17 to 30 hours by Chef Kenji Nakagawa who leads the kitchen.

The signature dish  is  aptly named Goku Raku Ramen, and comes in a rich broth consisting of a complex blend of pork, chicken and fish which is simmered for 30 hours. Both the large (RM23.90) and small (RM18.90) servings are topped with char siew slices, flavoured egg, onions, Japanese leeks, bamboo shoots and seaweed. The texture of the fresh noodle is slightly springy. The ramen in Shoyu Tonkotsu broth is served with a swirl of fragrant garlic oil  giving it an appetising aroma.
