The Wok Cafe may sound familiar to many Penangites as this restaurant is the outlet to the Hot Wok Restaurant along Burma Road in Penang. It is housed in a corner shoplot situated in the bustling Kota Damansara township, a new residential and commercial address. Together with a few friends, we went there to savor their Penang Hawker Food and Nyonya cuisine, courtesy of Uncle Robert Yeoh and his son Mervyn (the chef).

There are several variations of beef noodles in Penang with the all time favorite beef ball noodles and the Hakka beef ball noodles.
This time the focus is on the Ngau Larm Mee stall (Chinese style braised beef brisket noodle) at Sai Lam, an old coffee shop at the corner of Chulia Street and Carnarvon Street. This delicious braised beef can be served with variation of noodles: springy thin or the broad wanton noodles or better still with hor fun. Whatever the choice is, it comes with generous portion of flavorful beef pieces.

Passerby from town to Paya Terubong area will sure to bypass this stall located on the right side of the road, selling You Tiao or more commonly known as Yau Char Kwai. This deep fried Chinese crullers which originated from Kuala Perlis, are similar to the normal crullers except they are extremely long, around 14″. It comes with variety of fillings, indeed a great innovation from the original version. At times, the place which is operated by Mr Tan, would be crowded with customers dropping by for the orders. We had fun visiting the stall while watching the making of the deep fried You Tiao.

Nyonya Kuih can be found in most of the wet market around Georgetown. They come in many different texture, shapes and multi colored. They are mostly steamed with some deep fried and baked.
I got to enjoy some freshly made kuih at Kuih Nyonya Moh Teng Pheow located in Jalan Mesjid, Off Chulia Street. The owner, Mr Mook and his family has been making the Nyonya Kuihs and supplying them to kuih peddlers for many years in Penang but nowadays they just cater to the hotels and directly walk-in customers.

Many people will agree that Kek Seng is the best place for ice kacang with its signature homemade colorful agar-agar jelly and durian ice cream besides other toppings of red bean and jagung (creamy corn). The bowl of ice kacang is drenched with colorful sweet sugar syrup and dose with evaporated milk.

Many of you would definitely be familiar with Hot Wok! The name is associated with the abundant of Nyonya food coupled with beautiful decorations and authentic Peranakan ambiance.
Customers who have frequented the restaurant in Penang knows that Hot Wok Nyonya & Local Cuisine has established itself as the premier restaurant in serving authentic Peranakan or commonly known as Nyonya food from its earlier years in Gurney Plaza and later shifted to Tanjung Tokong. Now they still continue serving their customers in a double storey pre-war house along Jalan Burma, near to the many food eateries of Nagore Road and New World Park.

It is always a good time to visit Penang and especially now when the great durian season is on. Just imagine going on a makan trip in Penang to feast on the King of Fruits, Durian! Our family just loves the thorny spikes durian with its strong pungent aromatic flesh. There are numerous stalls in town.
