At 42º La Boheme, we discovered new textures and flavours during our lunch visit. Opened since July, Mathieu Guegan and his wife Huvi have created a French cafe in a heritage house. Coupled with simple decorations and some old collectibles, the ambience is casual. The only visible sign of the cafe in bustling Jalan Sri Bahari, is the small wooden sign, 42º La Boheme, hanging on the front gate.

Mathieu, who also runs the kitchen, learnt to bake since he was 12 and has spent years working in some restaurants. He makes his own bread and desserts and offers lovely pastries, galettes and quiches. Besides the short and fresh menu, a variety of desserts can be found displayed at the counter. The chalkboard showcases a selection of pizzas available only on weekends.

Business is usually bustling at the Hainanese Chicken Rice stall in Kheng Pin Cafe located in the junction of Sri Bahari Road and Penang Road. This stall run by a couple is one of the places with a good rendition of chicken rice in town. The poached chicken is deliciously prepared, a firm smooth skin with a layer of gelatin underneath and tender juicy meat.

Penang Hawker Food – Lorbak @Kheng Pin

Posted by: CK Lam    in Georgetown, Hawker, Lorbak, Penang

Another Penang food that most people enjoyed eating is the Penang Lorbak. It is an appetizer, a side dish of fried mixed stuff of fish fritters, fried beancurd, spring rolls, fried octopus, preserved century eggs and the lorbak roll.

The lorbak roll itself consists of chunky bites of marinated five spiced pork wrapped with bean curd skin (fu-pei). All these are eaten with a dipping of chili sauce and thick starchy lor sauce with beaten egg swirls.

Foong Wei Restaurant, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Penang Restaurant

Penangites often patronised Foong Wei Restaurant in Jalan Sri Bahari for its delicious food and good service. This restaurant is located diagonally across The Ship (that serves Western Food) and on the same row as Kheng Pin cafe (famous for its lobak). It has been around for a long time and has since expanded its business from one shoplot to two.

We had their speciality dish of deep fried pork leg. The big plate of pork leg comes with small fried man tou and cucumber pickles. The skin was very crispy and the meat was tender. The fatty side of the meat is best eaten with the sourish pickles.

Steamed kampung chicken with Chinese wine. The chicken meat has the pungent smell of the wine and best of all, the gravy goes well with a bowl of hot rice. We also ordered a plate of stir fry Hong Kong choy sum. I personally feel that they added too much minced garlic to it.

Braised tau foo with mushroom.

The taste of the food? The photo shows that my son and myself are very happy with our meal. We ended it with a dessert of hot soya bean milk with ginkgo nuts.
