Oyster Porridge in Perak Road, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Hawker, Jelutong, Penang, Porridge

We begin a weekend morning with a warm and filling bowl of oyster porridge, or better known orh moi. I was introduced to this oyster porridge at Perak Road in Jelutong. It is one of the local’s favorite choice of  breakfast. This stall starts selling early in the morning serving breakfast, right till lunch.

Being the only stall in the coffee shop, it draws in quite a crowd with the place packed with customers. Many were seen waiting for their take-away and others busy slurping down their porridge.

Cintra Street which starts after the junction of Kimberley Street leading all the way towards Chulia Street has numerous hawker food stalls and old sytle Chinese restaurants. Most of the food along this street is simply irresistible as they have been operating for a long time. In fact I did a Cintra Street food crawl review one year ago covering most of the food stalls along this street except missing out on this Yee Sang Kai Chok (fish/chicken porridge).

Penang has a number of stall selling porridge and one particular stall that is worth mentioning is the Tai Buan Porridge. It is housed in a shoplot on Muntri Street serving good rice porridge and side dishes. This Teochew style porridge is very popular and most of the customers are back for return visits.

Hubby and I came across this old eatery on Magazine Road which has been around for 60 over years. This place which serves porridge is operated by the elderly Mr Tan with the help of his son. This eatery has an amazing seating arrangement, with tiny wooden stools (bangku) on top of long benches.

Amazingly, this place is one of the handfuls of stalls left in Penang that does not even have a signboard!

Penang Food – Pork Innards Porridge

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Georgetown, Hawker, Penang, Porridge

The Chowrasta Market is lined with plenty of food stalls selling throughout the morning. There is one particular stall that sells tasty pork innards porridge. If you are a huge fan of chu chap jook which is considered a bizarre food to some people but a delicacy to others, do check out this stall that has been operating for many years.

Fancy having a bowl of piping hot seafood beehoon or pork porridge? I had my share over at Lam Kei located in Nam Thean coffee shop along the busy Jalan Jelutong. This stall has been around for thirty-five years with the second generation taking over now. They have another stall selling this similar food inside Kedai Kopi Leong Huat Seng in Sungai Tiram, near to the Penang Airport.

Recently our family together with some friends went over to Butterworth to try out the food at Ah Keat Seafood Restaurant. We were recommended to this place by Sueh Ying. As to the location we only know it is located somewhere in Jalan Raja Uda near to the Nine Emperor Temple. With our trusted Garmin Navigator, we arrived at the temple. From there we slowly search for the restaurant and true enough, we found it located just a few meters opposite the temple.

This restaurant initially was doing zhu char and has since ventured into more imported live seafood items in the last few years. It has rows of huge glass tanks with wide selection of live seafood which can be ordered in a variety of preparation options, including steamed, stir-fried and deep-fried.
