The Sungai Pinang Food Court located at the corner of Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway (formerly known as Jelutong Expressway) and Jalan Sungai Pinang exit contains a great variety of hawker food.

One of the stalls which I regularly patronize is the Herbal Soup Stall, which offers hot bowls of nourishing Chinese soup. The stall enjoyed brisk business from the old and the young alike. The soups are boiled for long hours, infusing nutrition using many different Chinese herbs and  ingredients. There are up to ten over choices to choose from.

Taiwan Foods is located in Double 33 Kopitiam, a corner shop lot along Jalan Aziz Ibrahim, with the Queensbay Mall just a stone’s throw away. This place is perfect for a simple quick lunch. The menu is pretty straight forward, serving mostly rice dishes and noodle dishes with several types of braised meat.

Whenever we are near the area, we would drop by for a meal in this stall, which is on the same row with the Kampar Fish Jelly Restaurant.

Beoy Chong Kee Restaurant is an old eatery tucked behind the bustling Cintra Street. This restaurant is a great place for a hearty home cooked meal! It has been occupying the ground floor of the People’s Court for a number of decades, with a set up of just a couple of tables. Our family do enjoy eating at this place from time to time.

If there was ever a time when you had Japanese food to the point you leave the shop beaming from ear to ear, tonight had to be it. The venue? Isaribi Tei Japanese Restaurant which serves authentic Japanese Cuisine of course! This Penang based Japanese Restaurant is located at Burmah Square on Jalan Chow Thye, on the row of shoplots nearby Him Heang.

The night was pouring heavily, and with our stomachs growling, this seems to be the perfect place. The garden which leads to the restaurant was beautifully decorated, and even though it was dark, it gave the place a very cozy feeling.

Upon entering the place, we were greeted by their friendly waiters and shown to our table. Looking around, we can see that the spacious restaurant is decorated with a tapestry of cultures. Wooden panels decorated the walls, while memorabilia of all sorts were donning the sides. We don’t feel that we are actually in an old pre-war shoplot.

*** Update:  Tonki Bento has closed
Irasshaimase! greeted us when we stepped into Tonki Bento. In Penang particularly Pulau Tikus area, there is a higher number of Japanese restaurants mainly due to the presence of Japanese expatriates staying around this buzzing area. Tonki Bento is one of the many outlets tucked in the quiet Lintang Burma.

Entrance of the restaurant is lighted up with red lanterns which you can’t miss. The interior decoration is simple yet nice; with soothing Japanese music playing in the background. The place is patronized mainly by Japanese and some of them were chattering away, giving this place a very authentic Japanese feel. We took some photos and browse through some Manga while waiting for our food.

This is my hubby’s Unagi Kabayaki – grilled eel. Grilled lightly brown on the outside with a sweetish sauce and yet soft on the inside. He likes the unagi for its rich flavour.

My Saba Shioyaki – Grilled saba with salt. The fillet was grilled until slightly char but not burnt yet maintaining the nice fishy smell. The skin was crisp and not too salty.

For an additional add-on of RM2.50, we get a set which include a bowl of rice, salad, miso soup, fruits and ice cream. This was a simple and tasty meal. They are introducing a new menu from this month onwards with more choices of sushi, sahimi and bento sets. Patrons could opt for delivery services too!

Tonki Bento is located in No. 2, Lintang Burmah, Pulau Tikus and it closes on Tuesday.

Last night dinner was at the new and spacious Korean Palace BBQ Restaurant in Jalan Tanjung Tokong. Located on the 1st floor of Wisma Bayu, it was opened in late April 2008. This was the first time we step into this restaurant. At the entrance of the lift, was a poster featuring some of their dishes. The lift leads directly to the entrance of this brightly lighted restaurant. Browsing through the menu, we found many choices of soups, noodles, rice, stews and the popular barbeque meat charcoal grilled at the table. One part of the menu is only available for lunch. We started the BBQ meal with an assortment of “banchan”, small cold side dishes (total of 10) and a plate of salad. The salad is a combination of lettuce, perilla leaves, slices of pumpkin and corn. We love the perilla leaves which is very aromatic.
Just see how much trouble they take to cut this piece of paper thin pickled white radish. On top of our food list was Chadolbaegi – beef brisket (RM 45), followed by Osam Bulgogi – pork belly with squid (RM35). The thinly beef slices comes with quite a bit of fats which makes it more tender. The pork and squid were marinated in red pepper paste. The meat is charcoal grilled by the staff unlike when we did it ourselves in Kim Chi Restaurant. The grilled tender and juicy pieces of meat is absolutely delicious eaten with a dip in their special sauce. It enhances the flavor of the meat wonderfully !!The slightly spicy red pepper paste used for marinating the pork and squid is very tasty and it further raises our appetite. The meat is best eaten wrapped up in lettuce or the perilla leaves.Yukgaejang is another dish that we had. This hot and spicy beef soup has a combination of beef slices, lots of fresh vegetables and egg. It is accompanied with a bowl of rice.
Dining is very pleasant in this very well ventilated restaurant. Exhaust funnels fixed under the table helps to suck up the smoke from the griller. So no worries of smelly clothings after the meal :)
At the end of our meal, we were served with watermelon and refreshing chilled dessert drink. My son loves the drink……who would have thought that a simple rice drink tasted so good.
We fully enjoyed the dinner. The staff were friendly and service was quick….with a press on the bell at the table. There will definitely be many more visits for us to this restaurant to savour their other dishes especially their Beef Bulgogi. The last time we had this dish was at Sam Oh Jeong Korean Restaurant. I highly recommend this Korea Palace BBQ Restaurant to anyone looking for good Korean food in Penang. This place is run by a friendly Korean lady who is always on hand to assist newbies to Korean cuisine.
Here is the location.

To savour tasty Taiwanese food in Penang, the place to be is Kocha Taiwanese Delight in 229, Jalan Burma Road. This restaurant is walking distance from the famed biscuit shop, Him Heang. It is decorated with simple furniture, mainly rattan chairs and lots of knick knack plus several different sizes aquariums.
As for the food, there is a wide selection of noodles, rice and snacks in their menu to choose from. We ordered the sliced cold Drunken Chicken, Kimchi pork in hot plate, salted vegetables (kiam chye) and also the Dumplings in Beef Soup. There were five big dumplings in the bowl of slightly spicy soup. Being beef soup lovers, we give this dish a big thumbs-up.

The dishes that we had goes well with the rice but take note that their bowl of rice cost RM1.20..(bit pricey for plain white rice). Overall the food is very tasty and unique in its own way. Business starts from 12.00 noon right till 10.30pm. For reservations, do call 04 2275048.

Finding a car park space can be a bit difficult during peak hours as there are only a few parking lots right in front of the restaurant.
