On the bustling Burma Road in Penang, El Faro is the latest addition to a handful of genuine tapas joints around town. Small plates of tapas, prepared by executive chef Jack Yeap, come with rich offerings of pungent cheeses, olive oils, premium sardine, anchovies and tuna.

Tapas, or small plates of snacks, which originated from Spain, are best enjoyed under the covered patio in front of this restaurant. Alternatively, there’s also an indoor air-conditioned dining area. Try the Boquerones – a perfect marriage of refreshing sweet watermelon, salty preserved Spanish white anchovies with mint, sea salt and extra virgin olive oil.

Da Ban Chinese Restaurant is renowned for serving Szechuan cuisine as well as steamboat. Its location in Jalan Zainal Abidin, stuck between Jalan Macalister and Burma Road, has a huge gold and black signboard on its facade.

A man-made bridge after the main entrance leads us into several dining areas. This fairly large air-conditioned restaurant has its interior decorated with Chinese furniture and bamboo plants.

The Cape @Pulau Tikus, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Non-Halal, Penang, Pulau Tikus, Restaurant

 * This outlet has since closed down in 2012.

If you are looking for simple, wholesome meals in Pulau Tikus, a good choice would be The Cape. The restaurant which was once located in Gurney Plaza has since shifted to a two storey shoplot, at the junction of Burma Road and Cantonment Road.

The menu offers healthy dishes cooked with chicken, fish, and pork. For starters, we had the aromatic garlic meat dumpling and the Mansion ham rolls (RM6.90). The pan-fried dumpling was good dipped in the soy sauce vinegar mixture with ginger strips. The Mansion ham rolls had the ham wrapped up in a meat parcel. One serving comes with four large pieces and a dipping sauce.

Located in Chow Thye Road away from the buzzing Burma Road is a new European style wine bar, aptly named That Little Wine Bar! I came to know of this quaint cozy wine bar when it opens in December 2009.

It was a pleasant surprise when my family was invited by the owner, Chef Tommes and his wife, Louise over for dinner. We were welcomed into the restaurant which expresses a sense of coziness with its decoration and low ambient lighting.

During the weekend I enjoyed a wonderful lunch with friends in the newly opened Hainanese Delights Restaurant in Penang. This place is located in the low rise 1926 Heritage Hotel on Burma Road, and emerges as the newest addition to the number of Hainanese restaurant in town. This restaurant is operated by a Hainanese, while the food is cooked by a Hainanese chef too. The menu of this restaurant brings a selection of Hainanese specialties and some western-style dishes.

Located along the roadside of Jalan Mount Erskine Penang is a small hawker food center.  This food center nearby Fettes Park has most of its stalls sheltered from the afternoon sun by some makeshift tents and shady trees.

The popiah (spring roll) sold in one of the stalls there is slightly different from the regular popiah. Besides all the main ingredients this version comes with crab meat. So far, I have only come across this place and the stall in Padang Brown Hawker Centre using this ingredient.

The strong aroma of the herbs, the sourness of the soup and the quality of our Penang prawn paste makes our Penang hawker food, the Assam Laksa so different from the others. There are many places around town that sells this noodle and the more well known Assam Laksa is from the stall beside the Ayer Itam Market.
