Hawker food features prominently in the culinary culture in the state of Penang. Across the industry there are always places that constantly make headlines while others tend to be excellent but underrated, and the New Cathay Coffee Shop is classified as the latter.

Located along Lorong Kuching right off the ever bustling Burmah Road, this coffee shop is one of the decent places to sample a plethora of Penang’s street hawker fare. A favorite mostly with the locals, it begins to fill up as early as 7.30 in the morning and is absolutely packed during the peak hours of ten in the morning right through two in the afternoon.

For those opting for a lighter snack, the apom manis (Indian style pan cake) stall right beside the shop is an excellent alternative. Interestingly, the owner still maintains the tradition of using charcoal stoves and clay pots.

Simply Nutritious is an excellent place for a simple wholesome spaghetti meal! Since starting this business one half years ago, Chef Foo Jan has been serving unique pasta dishes to Penangites. Initially a stall in Burmah Road/Jones Road junction, Simply Nutritious has since become a café in Lebuh Melaka!

Customers now dine in a more conducive environment with comfortable seats and air-conditioning. This is probably the only place in Penang that concentrates on the pasta and serves the accompanying meat as a complement.

During the weekend I enjoyed a wonderful lunch with friends in the newly opened Hainanese Delights Restaurant in Penang. This place is located in the low rise 1926 Heritage Hotel on Burma Road, and emerges as the newest addition to the number of Hainanese restaurant in town. This restaurant is operated by a Hainanese, while the food is cooked by a Hainanese chef too. The menu of this restaurant brings a selection of Hainanese specialties and some western-style dishes.

The Wok Cafe may sound familiar to many Penangites as this restaurant is the outlet to the Hot Wok Restaurant along Burma Road in Penang. It is housed in a corner shoplot situated in the bustling Kota Damansara township, a new residential and commercial address. Together with a few friends, we went there to savor their Penang Hawker Food and Nyonya cuisine, courtesy of Uncle Robert Yeoh and his son Mervyn (the chef).

It currently houses a number of restaurants, a couple of franchise eateries, a performance pavilion, boutiques and last but not least, the Hawker Center! Food crawling is a good idea as there are plenty of dining options and you can move from one outlet to the other sampling the food Penang has to offer. We visited Hai Onn located in Burmah Road, Penang. This coffee shop cum restaurant has been around for many years and is one of the few old style traditional Hainanese restaurant around Georgetown. Just beside Macalister Lane junction, this place has a hawker stall selling  koay teow soup in the morning (same as the outlet in Pitt Street Coffeeshop) which is a favourite Penang food among the locals. From noon onwards, this place operates as a restaurant.

They have a few signature dishes including the Hainanese Pork Chop and Chicken Chop.  Their version is done differently from those sold nowadays. It is really delicious! I like the flavors of the gravy which has some starchy potato in it. I opt for some toast bread to dip with the gravy. I strongly recommend that everyone try it.

Starview Restaurant, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Georgetown, Penang, Penang Restaurant

The months of August always calls for a special celebration among our friends and families. Our three families have been having dinner gatherings to catch up with each other and generally just having a really great time together.

Our dinner with both of the Chong and Ding families was held in Starview Restaurant in Burmah Road. You may find my previous lunch outing post about this place, while yesterday’s gathering is a whole new perspective. Before I go on any further about the food, I would really like to thank KS and her family for making this dinner happen and also happy to meet up with GT and her family.

Many Penangites would somehow or rather been to this restaurant, which has stood the test of time. Since its conception, it has seen many other restaurants rise and fall, but Starview remains Penang’s favorite after all these years.

We were given the privilege to dine in their VIP rooms, thanks to Lisa who organized everything to perfection for KS. After much catching up and interaction, the first delicacy of the night was served. It was the Four Season’s Dish and I have to admit that every quarter held its own pristine flavor.

The four quarters combining into a perfect dish.

The selection of red wine on that night was just too sweet for words and it compliments  the cuisine very well. Unfortunately, I would not call myself a wine drinker and hence I ended up having only a glass for the whole night.

That’s me hogging the wine glasses :D

Each of us was served with an individual bowl of shark fin soup.

A fantastic fish dish prepared in two ways -  fish cutlets are sauteed with a medley of carrots, scallops, celery, waterchestnut and snowpeas. The remainder of the fish is deep fried till crisp.

Next came the tofu pieces stuffed with fillings, which is fried till golden brown. This dish is garnished with chopped pieces of red and green chili peppers. Indeed a very appetizing dish with the finely chopped chili strongly enhancing the aroma of the tofu.

Lastly, the fried noodles (mee-tiau) with prawns, chicken and mushroom slices. This noodle is not as refined as the ordinary ones, however it was equally superb. The QQ-ness of the noodle was such a tickle to the taste buds!

For dessert we had soy bean milk with black sesame glutinous rice ball  (tang yuen). The accompanying tang yuen was smooth and goes pretty well with the milk. A perfect dessert to end this sumptuous meal!

This is a snap shot of the mums as the dads were busy chatting away with each other. We have been good friends for such a long time, and I sincerely hope our friendships will be everlasting.

Our dinner feast ends with this spectacular photo depicting our three kids…oops, it should be our three ‘young’ men!

It is definitely a beautiful evening when one is with the wonderful company of good friends and family.

**UPDATE**

This ever famous Starview Restaurant on Penang island will be shifting to the New World Park on 8th of October 2008. This came as a shock to me as Starview has grown to become one of Penang’s famous Landmarks & Restaurant.
