SMAAK!ZA – “Taste! South Africa” 2012 was in Penang recently for the “Table” sessions.  Held at Maricosa Pacific Rim & Hawaiian Cuisine in Straits Quay, the event featured an eclectic 4 course dinner menu paired with a mini-vertical tasting of among the top award-winning Pinotage wines.

Thomas Ling, principal partner of Entwine Consultancy hosted the event and introduced the lineup of featured wines while Satoru Nakamatsu shared his passionate views behind the mouth-watering Rainbow Nation’s colourful cuisine.

We started off with the Savana, made from Granny Smith apples grown in the Elgin area in the Western Cape of South Africa. This naturally brewed and matured premium cider went well with the Maricosa bruschetta and the Mediterranean mackerel salad which was brought together with many fresh greens, mackerel and pleasantly sharp cheese.

Ferringhi Garden Restaurant is one of only a few garden restaurants in Penang. I have been visiting this restaurant since 2008 and glad to say that it is going stronger each year. For this year Christmas celebration, the restaurant has everyone in a festive mood with its exterior and interior beautifully decorated with festive lights.

Barone Ricasoli is available in selected Penang restaurants’ wine list!

A group of us had an enjoyable time sampling and learning about Barone Ricasoli wines at two different restaurants, Suffolk House and That Little Wine Bar. Both the chefs have prepared creations to match with the Italian wine which is distributed by Asiaeuro.

Below are several wines that are worth trying:
Brolio Chianti Classico 2009
Rocca Guicciarda Chianti Classico Reserva 2008
Casalferro IGT Toscana 2008
Castello Di Brolio Vin Santo 2004

A warm welcome greeted me as I once again stepped into the charming Ferringhi Garden Restaurant located in Batu Ferringhi, Penang. Many readers came to know about this truly captivating restaurant which was first published in my blog, way back in 2008.

During that time the garden in the restaurant was not well blossomed. Fast forward by two years, the plants have now matured which subsequently makes the name of this place fits appropriately, a “restaurant within a garden”!
