Near to the intersection of Campbell Street and Carnavon Street in Penang, is the Campbell Street Market. This corner market building with a brick facade still maintained its ornate cast iron columns and brackets. It has a poultry section, seafood and meat sellers.

In the morning especially during weekends, this wet market is very crowded. Busy atmosphere prevails by the stalls selling vegetables and hawkers pedaling their food along one side of the market building.

Teik Seng, one of the popular Chu Char stall in Penang has made its way to a new outlet to cater for its increasing number of customers. Opened its door for business on the 8th April 2010, the new outlet is just a few doors away and very close to its previous site in Carnavon street.

*Update 25/04/2010: This restaurant recently has a new signboard, with the name of the restaurant changed to TekSen Restaurant. No worries, it is the same owner and shop!

There are several variations of beef noodles in Penang with the all time favorite beef ball noodles and the Hakka beef ball noodles.

This time around the focus is on the Ngau Larm Mee stall (Chinese style braised beef brisket noodle) at Sai Lam, an old coffee shop at the corner of Chulia Street and Carnarvon Street. This delicious braised beef can be served with variation of noodles: springy thin or the broad wanton noodles or better still with hor fun.  Whatever the choice is, it comes with generous portion of flavorful beef pieces.

Heavenly Chinese Roast Meat can be found at Sky and Star in Penang.

One of my favorite stall would be the one located on the ground floor of Sky Hotel on Chulia Street which is known for its high number of budget hotels and small cafes. You could easily spot  this blue-ish building with the stall ‘WAI KEE’ right in the front entrance which is a few doors down from Ecco Cafe.

Here you will find delicious assorted roast meat. Ordering comes in individual servings or in individual plate with an assortment of your favourite choice of meat. The good stuff that I usually order is the Siew Yoke, Siew Cheong and Char Siew. The Siew Yoke has a very crispy skin and also the right amount of salty flavor.

The day started with a “yum cha” session at the old eatery, Aik Hoe Restaurant located in Carnavon Street. This restaurant which occupied two shop houses still managed to retain its old nostalgic charm after fifty over years. The fixtures of old ceiling fans with flooring of small squares of blue and white tiles still remain there after all these years, making this place a real heritage in its own way.

Nothing much have changed and the restaurant still has the very ‘Chinese old school look’, even still with its signature metal chairs. The shop’s name has been embedded into the metal chair itself; a real rare find nowadays.
