Lameizi Restaurant in Bayan Lepas is famed for its spicy Szechuan-soup (ma la) steamboat. The soup is filled with dried chili, with a layer of chili oil floating on top. Besides this signature soup, there are several other tasty soup bases to choose from — chicken, old duck, pork knuckle, tom yam and fish. The clear chicken soup offers a welcome throwback for those who prefer a more traditionally-flavoured steamboat stock. Each of the stock is boiled for hours for it to acquire its natural sweetness and flavour.

The steamboat at Lameizi is cooked on an infusion plate, which is faster than the conventional potable gas stove or charcoal pot. We choose to have a sectioned pot with the old duck soup on one side, and the sour vegetable fish soup on the other. The sour vegetable fish soup was rich and sourish and includes plenty of salted vegetables (kiam chye).

Ever tasted the delicacy Stinky Tofu (Chao Tofu) from Taiwan?

It was an amazing steamboat dinner we had on the weekend with some friends at Tang Steamboat & BBQ Restaurant in Rangoon Road, Penang. It is a different kind of steamboat whether when it comes to choices of food and soup.

Customers can choose between the buffet and the ala carte meal. We took the ‘All You Can Eat Buffet’ at RM22 nett per person which includes a wide range of seafood, meat and side dishes for the steamboat and skewered sticks for the BBQ. Besides that, we got the chance tasting the famous Taiwanese specialty Chao Tofu.

Young Heart Restaurant is tucked in a strategic location near Pulau Tikus market in Penang island. Found nearby the junction of Cantonment Road and Market Street, this restaurant serves up some delicious food while keeping the prices reasonable. Remarkably, it has been around since 2005 and show no signs of slowing down.

The theme of the restaurant revolves around the Heart, as stated in its motto; The Fragrance of the Refreshment comes from the Heart. Most entries in the menu are kept plain and simple, with main usage of healthy ingredients and less reliant on extra artificial flavoring. Indeed a delightful change from all those other food we get these days.

La Mian is Chinese noodles that goes through the hand-making process of repeating stretching and pulling. This type of noodle has since gained popularity in Penang in recent years after the opening of places like Dragon-i and Shanghai Ding. Another newly opened outlet is the Tang Dynasty Imperial Noodle Restaurant. We stop by this restaurant for lunch to try out their various types of noodles.

We went for the basic item – the la mian and dumplings. The Chinese chef prepares the dumplings in the open kitchen which faces the entrance of the restaurant.

Two plates of hot dumpling with minced pork, one steam and one pan fried….eaten with a sauce which makes up of vinegar, ginger and chili oil.

This is the pan fried dumplings with crispy bottom.

Besides the dumplings, we had the stir fried la mian with pork and another plate with beef. Both the noodles is actually quite nice and chewy. Their way of stir frying makes it very tasty and it doesn’t have the taste of our local fried noodles.

We paid over RM32 (plus drinks) for this full and satisfying lunch. We will be dropping by this place again to try their other cold dishes and hot plates.

This restaurant is located at 70-A, Jalan Zainal Abidin.
