Public Cafe is just another neighborhood coffee shop in the pleasant surroundings of Gurney Drive. Located next to the famed Song River Cafe, this coffee shop is a favorite spot for me as it has a stall that serves up both delicious yet reasonable seafood noodles and porridge.

Take a pick from the striking mix of ingredients and several types of noodles.  The prices varies according to the seafood ingredients, with pawns, crabs, paddy frogs (tin kai/chui kay) and varieties of fish.

Yee Heong Restaurant is a great place to enjoy a Chinese meal. It is one of the Chinese restaurants in Campbell Street, Georgetown that not only serves dim sum for breakfast but also Chu Char for lunch and dinner.

Over a period of time, we have been having our lunch and dinner at this Chinese restaurant which is located right opposite the morning wet market. The menu is expansive, with plenty of Chinese dishes!

Terubong Seafood is one ‘chu char’ that is tucked away in a row of shop houses facing the very busy Jalan Paya Terubong. This place specializes in seafood and is popular among the neighborhood!

Straight to the good stuff! They commonly serve this small prawns deep fried as prawns fritters. It tasted good dipping it in chili sauce.

Yong Tau Foo is a famous hawker food in Ipoh and is commonly found in food court and coffee shops around the town. I personally find the Yong Tau Foo in Ipoh tastier, and was delighted when my friend KS introduced me to Nam Fatt Fish Ball Noodle House.

My family visited this air conditioned noodle shop which was located along Jalan Kampar on our recent Ipoh trip. Our meal started off with a plate of Stew Beef Noodles @RM6.80. It was served with plenty of vegetables, indeed different from those serve in Penang.

On my recent trip to Kuala Lumpur, I made my maiden visit to the bakery-cum-cafe Patisserie RUI Artisanal in Mont’ Kiara Meridin. This nice cozy place only house a couple of tables, but their array of cakes, pastries, chocolates and snacks are simply mouth-watering.

Emphasizing on the petite and beautiful presentations, RUI makes it a point to ensure the packaging of their products are charming. The chocolate and cookies are all wrapped up in boxes and bags with colorful ribbons, indeed very suitable for gifts & treats.

Gurney Drive is the food heaven for food lovers. It houses many seafood restaurants, cafes, fine dining restaurants and hawker stalls with some opening for business in the day and also in the night. One of the famous shops along the strip which was established decades ago is Song River Cafe, home to some of the tasty cuisines Penang has to offer!

With a group of visiting friends from Singapore, we dropped in Song River for the famous and unique Bah Kut Teh. Regular customers will know that this restaurant is managed by the same owner of Home Style Restaurant in Tanjung Bungah.

We had some nourishing porridge for dinner last night at Sin Geylang. The shop on Macalister Road (opposite Red Rock Hotel) specializes in claypot porridge, serve with dishes for lunch and dinner. The texture of the porridge was smooth, quite thick and topped with chopped spring onions with a dash of oil.

Updated on November 2010 : All the hawker stalls have stopped operation.

During my last makan outing at 127 Food Court on Burma Road I was recommended to try out their chu char stall, Anson Park Seafood. It has been around for a few years but it was only recently that we went to try out the food. Most of the table was having their signature dish of Curry Fish Head and the Nam Yue Bak and I was enticed by the looks of.

This Curry Fish Head is the milk-based curry rather than the usual santan (coconut milk). The curry is not really spicy yet very flavorful with lots of lady fingers, tomatoes, onions and mint leaves, served hot in a claypot. The taste of the curry is more towards Indian Curry with the usage of curry leaves.

***The restaurant has since closed down.

Nan Yang Chinese Cuisine Restaurant is located right at the centre of Georgetown. It is just opposite Yap Temple; sitting at the junction of Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling/Armenien Street.

This place has been around for quite a number of years but surprisingly not many bloggers have reviewed about it. The minute you step into this place, you will feel like you are back in the old Chinese houses where grandma used to stay in. The place is big and spacious with high ceilings and timber flooring for the upper floor. Chinese lanterns and kerosene lamps hang from the ceiling decorating its entrance.

There are many dishes offered in the menu with appetisers, noodles, seafood, meat and vegetables. A list of their signature dishes is posted up on the wall.

We were introduced to their poh piah which is done with a little twist. The difference lies in its ingredients and it is a dry version. It uses many colourful types of vegetables, meat and other ingredients. All these are wrapped up firmly with a piece of seaweed and the poh piah skin. The combination of its ingredients gives a very good flavour. Each roll is cut into two pieces which is quite a big portion. This dish makes a delightful light lunch even by itself.

Taukua fried with suan na (leeks) and prawns….they uses beancurd with five spice powder.

Mee suah cooked with chicken pieces in a rich soup with slices of salted vegetable (kiam chye)….. the taste is good but would be much better if they didn’t add in the sesame oil.

The unusual stir fried potato starch sheet. This is our first time having it and it turns out to be good. The noodles are fried in black sauce with generous amount of ingredients.

Ak Or – pieces of duck and yam simmered until soft and served in a claypot. The gravy has all the flavours of the yam.

Fried oh chien…. the oysters were big and fresh.

After the meal, we were given a complementary plate of dessert – tee nya kuih. This soft and smooth kuih is taken with palm sugar syrup. We frequently buy this from a roadside stall in Swatow Lane which sells the yellow and green version. I wonder if the stall is still around since most of them have shifted into the New World Park.

We were happy with the meal which cost a mere RM 62.00 and the clean environment of this old building. There are so many more dishes that we haven’t try out and we are sure of coming back again.
