Yong Tau Foo is a famous hawker food in Ipoh and is commonly found in food court and coffee shops around the town. I personally find the Yong Tau Foo in Ipoh tastier, and was delighted when my friend KS introduced me to Nam Fatt Fish Ball Noodle House.

My family visited this air conditioned noodle shop which was located along Jalan Kampar on our recent Ipoh trip. Our meal started off with a plate of Stew Beef Noodles @RM6.80. It was served with plenty of vegetables, indeed different from those serve in Penang.

Heng Kee Restaurant is a traditional Chinese coffee shop located on the left hand side of China Street in Penang. For those who are not familiar with this part of town, China Street is directly in front of the Goddess of Mercy Temple (Kuan Yin Teng). This place serves mainly chu char with variety of home-cooked style dishes.

It was much easier for us to patronized this place as it is open on Sunday. For the first dish of Curry Tumis, we chose to have the Kui Kau fish. The fresh pieces of fish were cooked in the appetizing tamarind gravy with lots of lady fingers and tomatoes. Its taste is less sourish and not as oily compared to those from Sin Kheng Aun Restaurant.

The Indian food, Putu Mayam is a snack eaten with fresh grated coconut and brown sugar or gula Melaka. It is also known as string hoppers and is eaten cold. This sticky noodle like snack is made with pressing the dough through a mould and steamed. It is a very popular snack and sold in many places. Most of us would have eaten it before.

Lately I was introduced by a friend to a stall in Little India that sells this traditional white delicacy together with the unusual brown ones. It is made with adapting the ingredient, biji sawi which many people claim to be healthier as it helps to regulate cholesterol and blood sugar level.

Sin Kheng Aun Restaurant situated in Chulia Lane is one of the prominent Hainanese restaurants in Penang. This restaurant is very popular with the locals and tourists for its Hainanese food and also local dishes. Specialist of this restaurant includes the Curry Gulai Tumis, Kerabu Prawns, Hainanese Pork/Chicken Chop and many other selections of dishes.

My family and I have tried most of the dishes here as we have patronized this restaurant countless of time over the years. Their unique Haninese Pork Chop is a favorite and comes deep fried with an egg coating and paired with onions, peas and quarters of fried potatoes. The meat has a crispy exterior and went well with the slightly thick delicious gravy.

There are numerous Curry Mee stalls in Penang and each stall has its own kind of soup. Some have their coconut based stock reddish while some comes in a lighter pale color version, at times known as White Curry Mee. There are also different kinds of add-on such as curry chicken, fish balls and fish cakes.

These are some of the Curry Mee stalls that I used to patronized. First on the list would be the delicious bowl of Curry Mee from Tuai Pui Curry Mee at Weld Quay. Added with extra pieces of curry chicken, gizzard and chicken legs, this stall has been my favorite for some time now. I find the soup very authentic as well, as it is aromatic on its own.

Business Hour : Lunch till evening.

Update : The stall has since shifted to -

Eating puffer fish for the first time!

On a weekend trip to Kuala Lumpur, my family stayed two nights at the Prince Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Conlay. I chose this hotel as I was impressed by it when I attended the Dim Sum review event at their Chinese Restaurant, Tai Zi Heen in April.

Prince Residence was named The Best Serviced Apartment in Kuala Lumpur by Lifestyle & Travel Magazine – Asia Pacific Readers’ Choice Awards 2008. Their service apartments offers short and long-term guests a range of accommodation from the one-bedroom apartment, two-bedroom apartment, two plus one-bedroom family apartment and a penthouse apartment. More details of the apartments and rooms can be seen here.

Kuala Sepetang (Port Weld) is a fishing village near Taiping and is famous for its fresh seafood and mee banjir udang. It is around twenty kilometers from Taiping town and roughly twenty-five minutes traveling time. We were in Taiping for the cheng beng and we took the opportunity to try out the seafood after reading about it in the Kwong  Wah Yit Poh. The quiet town of Kuala Sepetang was buzzing with excitement due to the coming Bukit Gantang by-election. The roads were packed with vehicles parking on the roadside which was lined and decorated with the flags and banners of all parties. FRU and police trucks were everywhere as well. What a timing indeed!

After maneuvering through the jam, we finally reached the Restaurant Tepi Sungai. Quite literally, as the restaurant is RIGHT beside the river! It is on the first floor of the building. The ground floor is the docking area for the fishing boats.

A food trip this time around across the bridge took us to Nibong Tebal, Penang. We patronized this old style kopitiam Lim Aik Chew. This place is known for its fresh large prawns, and is popular among the tourist and locals alike.

Top of the menu was the prawns, of course! These famous prawns comes in several sizes, and subsequently with different prices. Their signature cooking method of these prawns is the Dried Curry, although there are other methods as well.

Dining at Ghee Seng Tomyam Seafood Restaurant was a first for us. This Thai restaurant located in Weld Quay has been around for a while and has a reputation for serving authentic Thai cuisine in Penang at very reasonable prices.

We had six dishes to go with rice. Tomyam is a must have dish but in this case, we had the White Tomyam instead of the traditional red version. This hot and sour soup has a lot of chopped garlic, chillies, lime juice, lemon grass and daun limau perut. We just love it.

Stir fried chicken meat with basil leaves in dark sauce.

Deep fried Yam Balls with fillings of minced meat and vegetable. The strips of yam was very crispy.

Mildly spiced Curry with chicken meat and long beans. Recommended!
Thai style fried omelette. Surprisingly this simple dish tasted very good.

Stir fried vegetable.

Presentation of the restaurant is kept simple (no frills and air-con).
