Over the weekend together with my blogger friends and photographers, we went around Air Itam to sample-fest some hawker food. We made our way to Kedai Kopi Wah Meng. The coffee shop located across the Sisters Curry Mee is a stone throw away from the Air Itam morning wet market, which itself is full of interesting local flavor.

Set within the stylish G Hotel in Gurney Drive, the twin restaurants Sesame & Soy is a modern and contemporary Chinese restaurant with unique dual dining experience. Both the menu is extensive, with plenty of modern Chinese cuisines with a fusion of the traditional East and modern Western cooking and presentation. Together with my in-laws, we dine at the Sesame to find out whether it is the place for us to hold our family Chinese New Year Reunion dinner.

Each diner is served their own portion in a fine dining concept. This form of serving is now a common norm in restaurants in Kuala Lumpur but is still relatively new in Penang. My in-laws had a surprising start to the fine dining concept as they are very much accustomed to the traditional Chinese way of dining where every dish is presented in the center of the table.

We had two tasting menu that was arranged for individual servings and some ala carte dishes.  The culinary presentation and the flavors were equally superb.

Sesame’s Menu III @ RM 118 ++ per person
Sichuan Duck
Shanghai Broth
Hunan BB Lobster
Baked Cod Fish
Golden Fried Rice
Green Tea Tiramisu

We started off with the amazing Sichuan chilled smoked duck beautifully laid on the plate. The jelly fish and smoked duck in a zesty and flavorful sauce combined well with the crunchy refreshing Japanese cucumber topped with tuna mayo.

Cintra Street which starts after the junction of Kimberley Street leading all the way towards Chulia Street has numerous hawker food stalls and old sytle Chinese restaurants. Most of the food along this street is simply irresistible as they have been operating for a long time. In fact I did a Cintra Street food crawl review one year ago covering most of the food stalls along this street except missing out on this Yee Sang Kai Chok (fish/chicken porridge).

There are numerous Curry Mee stalls in Penang and each stall has its own kind of soup. Some have their coconut based stock reddish while some comes in a lighter pale color version, at times known as White Curry Mee. There are also different kinds of add-on such as curry chicken, fish balls and fish cakes.

These are some of the Curry Mee stalls that I used to patronized. First on the list would be the delicious bowl of Curry Mee from Tuai Pui Curry Mee at Weld Quay. Added with extra pieces of curry chicken, gizzard and chicken legs, this stall has been my favorite for some time now. I find the soup very authentic as well, as it is aromatic on its own.

Pan mee is a delicious noodle that is handmade manually on the spot. I found a stall located in Yi Garden coffee shop along Macalister Road / Lorong Selamat selling this delicious pan mee. Also known as mee hoon kuih in Hokkien, you can have it with soup or the dry version; with many different sizes.

In Penang, beef noodles are very hard to come by. There are only a handful of stalls selling beef noodles compare to other hawker food. For us, our regular joint is the stall located at Beach/Chulia intersection.

Besides beef noodle, we also like  the Hakka style beef ball noodle. From what we gather, this is the only stall selling this delicious noodle in town. The bowl of dried noodle is topped up with stewed minced beef cooked in dark soya sauce. Additional items of spring roll and bean curd can be added too. We usually go for the dried koay teow and loh sui fan.

The dried noodle comes with a bowl of clear soup with ten springy beef balls and plenty of fresh parsley. The soup tasted superbly good with an added dash of pepper.

This delicious bowl of beef ball noodle cost RM4 and is only available for breakfast till lunch at Hoe Ping coffee shop located at Penang Road/Kampung Malabar. Try to be there early because the additional items are sold out pretty fast. This coffee shop offers two more yummy hawker food, lobak (available for the whole day) and bak moi (only at night). Click here for the Map Location.
