Built in 1929, Loke Thye Kee Restaurant down on Burma Road boasted a ship design in memory of its original waterfront location in Weld Quay. During its heyday, the restaurant was famous for its traditional Hainanese cuisine besides widely regarded as the place for matchmaking, weddings ceremonies as well as birthdays celebrations.

The historical place acquired by its current owners underwent a restoration programme and was restored to its former glory in late 2012.

Today, the refreshed Loke Thye Kee houses a number of restaurants: Kopitiam, Loke Thye Kee Restaurant and The Bridge Grill. Guests can enjoy pork-free Hainanese, Malaysian and Western delights at these pork free and Halal outlets certified by JAKIM.

Roti canai is available in numerous stalls around Penang and each stall has its own variations such as the roti sardin, roti telur and the paper-thin roti tissue. They serve it with their own curry dishes, from the simple dall curry to the meaty curry.

This time around our Penang food outing in the Mainland continue with Teochew cuisines at the popular Restaurant Chao Zhou. This Teochew style restaurant also serves a wide selection of dim sum for breakfast and numerous cuisines for lunch and dinner. I chanced upon it through its restaurant website. Heard that their dim sum is very popular too. Together with my In-laws, we made the trip to this restaurant which is located in Chai Leng Park, Penang Mainland. The restaurant has a large air-conditioned dining hall and a pleasant outdoor sitting area.

Straight to the dishes we indulged that evening!

We started with the superb deep fried items. There is a good variety to choose from and varies based on the customer choices. We had three different types of items, with the fried cho, ku chye kueh and prawns wrap with crisp vermicelli. All the deep fried items were served hot and crispy…very fragrant. Excellent appetizer to kick off the meal.

See Kong Ooi Restaurant in Transfer Road Penang which specializes in Hainanese and Hokkien chu char dishes is fondly refer as Sai Kong Huin by most of the Penangites Hokkien. It has been around for several decades now, and is still going strong until today!

This post is a collection of my trips to this restaurant, so don’t be shocked by the amount of food! I’ve made the trip there several times with my family and food bloggers BBO, Lingzie, Ken and NKOTB.

Gurney Drive is the food heaven for food lovers. It houses many seafood restaurants, cafes, fine dining restaurants and hawker stalls with some opening for business in the day and also in the night. One of the famous shops along the strip which was established decades ago is Song River Cafe, home to some of the tasty cuisines Penang has to offer!

With a group of visiting friends from Singapore, we dropped in Song River for the famous and unique Bah Kut Teh. Regular customers will know that this restaurant is managed by the same owner of Home Style Restaurant in Tanjung Bungah.

We had some nourishing porridge for dinner last night at Sin Geylang. The shop on Macalister Road (opposite Red Rock Hotel) specializes in claypot porridge, serve with dishes for lunch and dinner. The texture of the porridge was smooth, quite thick and topped with chopped spring onions with a dash of oil.

Penang has a number of stall selling porridge and one particular stall that is worth mentioning is the Tai Buan Porridge. It is housed in a shoplot on Muntri Street serving good rice porridge and side dishes. This Teochew style porridge is very popular and most of the customers are back for return visits.

The Wok Cafe may sound familiar to many Penangites as this restaurant is the outlet to the Hot Wok Restaurant along Burma Road in Penang. It is housed in a corner shoplot situated in the bustling Kota Damansara township, a new residential and commercial address. Together with a few friends, we went there to savor their Penang Hawker Food and Nyonya cuisine, courtesy of Uncle Robert Yeoh and his son Mervyn (the chef).

Euro Deli, a landmark brand which has been in our shores since 1991 had recently held a launching event at their Damansara Kim restaurant after undergoing some renovation. The outlet, now occupying two shoplots has a relaxed dining ambiance. On top of that, there is also a section selling its signature products such as sausages, cold cutlets and other products.

Recently, a few food bloggers and I were given a warm welcome into Yishensu Restaurant located in 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya. This restaurant with an inviting and pleasant ambiance serves many choices of wholesome and hearty vegetarian dishes, noodles and sweets. It is very popular with shoppers and also the residence living around the area.

Another outlet for authentic Hokkien dishes in Penang is in an old shophouse on the ground floor of the Macallum flats. Restaurant Hock Chuan Heong is not visible from the main road but still walkable distance to the main road, whereby you will find Hock Seng Rojak, my favorite rojak stall.

Hock Chuan Heong is one of the places with good Hokkien dishes that come with reasonable prices. As expected, the place was crowded as it was lunch hour. The choices of dishes are very limited as they concentrate on their few specialties, just like what you will find in Ang Hoay Loh and Sin Lean Heang. The first dish was the aromatic and tasty Oh Chien (fried oyster omelette) with its starchy texture.
