We were in Air Itam area on a lazy Sunday afternoon and since we were nearby Kafe Pantai Timur, we decided to stop over there for lunch. Located in the residential area of Paya Terubong, this coffee shop is home to many hawker stalls which mostly operate in the night. Among the sea of stalls includes the Pei Pa Duck stall.

It was relatively quiet, with only one stall selling Yong Tau Foo – an assortment of ‘ yeong liu’ which has fish paste stuffed in a variety of vegetables.

Yong Tau Foo is a famous hawker food in Ipoh and is commonly found in food court and coffee shops around the town. I personally find the Yong Tau Foo in Ipoh tastier, and was delighted when my friend KS introduced me to Nam Fatt Fish Ball Noodle House.

My family visited this air conditioned noodle shop which was located along Jalan Kampar on our recent Ipoh trip. Our meal started off with a plate of Stew Beef Noodles @RM6.80. It was served with plenty of vegetables, indeed different from those serve in Penang.

Sawara Restaurant is located in a corner shop house along busy Burma Road in Pulau Tikus area. Its main focus is on its fish steamboat and homemade Yong Tau Fu where the fish paste is made from mackerel fish. There are not many restaurants in town making their own fish paste nowadays.

Food Trail in Muar, Johor

On one of my recent Kuala Lumpur trips, a few of us paid a visit to the district of Muar in Johor which is also known as “Mar Poh” in Cantonese. We went to explored the town and had a light breakfast before we paid a visit to Octhavia, a factory which produced the town gourmet specialty, the otak-otak (pounded and seasoned shrimp/fish paste).

Young Heart Restaurant is tucked in a strategic location near Pulau Tikus market in Penang island. Found nearby the junction of Cantonment Road and Market Street, this restaurant serves up some delicious food while keeping the prices reasonable. Remarkably, it has been around since 2005 and show no signs of slowing down.

The theme of the restaurant revolves around the Heart, as stated in its motto; The Fragrance of the Refreshment comes from the Heart. Most entries in the menu are kept plain and simple, with main usage of healthy ingredients and less reliant on extra artificial flavoring. Indeed a delightful change from all those other food we get these days.

Ipoh Hawker Food – Yong Tau Foo

The best deep-fried yong tau foo that we had eaten is in Ipoh. The stall which looks a bit shabby and rundown is one of the many stalls cluttering under a big tree “tai shue keok” and located nearby Tuck Kee Restaurant in Jalan King, off Pasir Pinji.

It serves many varieties of fried yong tau foo like stuffed chili, brinjal, bitter gourd, fish ball, fish cakes and crispy foo chok. The fish paste is very fresh and has a springy texture.

The stall also sell different types of noodles …. curry, assam laksa and even dried ones. The curry is very lemak and the assam laksa although different from those in Penang is just as tasty.

Crispy deep fried prawn fritters with vegetables are fried on the spot.

Recommended drink… Hong Tau Ping (Ice Red Bean Shake). Unusual and very tasty – (give it an “A1”). The texture of the shake was smooth, creamy and the sweetness was just right. We were wondering how much blending is needed to make the red bean drink so creamy when this type of bean is know to be powderish when made into paste. It was so irresistible that my son had two glasses!!!


We found out a little too late that they have Loke Tau Ping (Ice Green Bean Shake) too. Already too full to have another glass, we plan to have it on our next visit to this place.

What is “Kampar Fish Jelly”? Well everyone will presume something sweet. Actually it is Yong Tau Foo, which is mostly found in Kampar, Ipoh and KL. There are a few shops selling Yong Tau Foo in Penang and we usually visit this shop located in Sungai Nibong town (near Queensbay Mall). The clean and brightly lited shop is airy though it is located in middle of a row of shops.

Yong Tau Foo is basically fish paste stuffed into varieties of vegetables and tofu. The fish paste is very fresh and springy.


Fried ingredients are served separately and the rest of the ingredients comes in a bowl of clear and tasty soup. All goes well with choices of white rice, yam rice and even Hakka noodle with minced pork.


Another side dish – Beggar Chicken.

It was an enjoyable Yong Tau Foo lunch with glasses of  barley drink (foo chook yee mai).
