Da Ban Chinese Restaurant is renowned for serving Szechuan cuisine as well as steamboat. Its location in Jalan Zainal Abidin, stuck between Jalan Macalister and Burma Road, has a huge gold and black signboard on its facade.

A man-made bridge after the main entrance leads us into several dining areas. This fairly large air-conditioned restaurant has its interior decorated with Chinese furniture and bamboo plants.

Just mention Goh Huat Seng Restaurant and usually one word come to mind… Steamboat! Having been around for more than 50 years, it is one of the oldest Teochew restaurants in Penang. Situated in the folds of Kimberley Street, many things have changed since the old days but one thing’s for sure… the traditional steamboat still comes lighted up with charcoal.

Head over to a ‘food court’ located directly opposite the Penang Floating Mosque in Tanjung Bunga which serves delicious typical Malay dishes. The two food stalls here are attracting customers far and near with their many varieties of dishes.

The place is usually crowded with people during lunch hour but Lidiana seems to be the more popular stall. Food are replenished once they are sold off…so it is always fresh and warm.
Stingray cooked in the very appetizing sourish and spicy sauce.

The spicy sambal with belacan goes well with fried chicken and fresh ulam.

Our favourite – fried cincaru fish stuffed with onions and chillis. Each of us had one of it on our plate of rice.

Location of this food court can be easily seen at – http://wikimapia.org/105485/. Do take a drive up here for lunch and at the same time, visit the magnificent Floating Mosque ….. here’s a night image of the mosque and its surrounding taken by hubby from Ratu Mutiara apartment.

Starview Restaurant, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Penang Restaurant

Starview Restaurant which has been around for years is located right in the busy junction of Burma Road and Jalan Telekom. Well, most Penangites will know it as the “every night also packed restaurant”. Its quite phenomenal actually, other restaurants in Penang have come around and gone but Starview has survived the decades strongly.
Since it is usually packed at night, we decided to give it a shot during lunch time. Fortunately for us, we manage to get a table as well as a carpark. Its been a while since we had a meal there, so we were unsure about their signature dishes.
The captain recommended the fish hotpot (Hu Lor) and my son was eager to give it a try. The hotpot of soup comes with pieces of fried fish and tofu. Two plates of freshly prepared raw fish slices comes with generous servings of vegetables.

This is the delicious and tasty hot bowl of fish soup.

We had the hotpot together with two other dishes…..Steamed Chicken with oyster sauce and the very appetising dish of Brinjal with ‘sambal hei bee’ (chilli dried prawns).

Overall a nice and satisfying lunch….

We drove over to Gurney Drive to have our seafood dinner with our parents in Bali Hai Seafood Market. This restaurant is on your right if you are travelling down from Gurney Plaza. The bright and colourful sign board can be seen from afar. There is a car park behind the restaurant.

The place is usually crowded during weekdays and weekends with locals and foreigners. Customers have a choice to pick and choose their seafood from the rows of aquarium.

We ordered the fried fish (cui jiam), flower crabs, claypot fish with preserved vegetable and yam, fried vegetable with sambal and noodles. The steamed flower crabs came with pounded ginger and stripes of black fungus. Chinese wine was added to enhance the flavour. The crab meat was so firm and fresh. We ended up using our hands to eat this seafood.

We then had the claypot with pieces of fish head cooked with preserved salted vegetable,  slices of yam, dried chili and plenty of leeks. We enjoyed its unique and appetising taste …

After that we were served another two dishes. The vegetable dish was a combination of long beans, star beans and lotus root fried with sambal. The lotus root was thinly sliced and tasted good. The fish (cui jiam) was  fried until crispy.

We rounded up the dinner with fried seafood mee-tiau. Fried dried and not oily, the noodle went well with the accompanying spicy sambal.

This place with a cosy ambiance is suitable for entertaining friends or a dinner with the family. You get to savour delicious and FRESH seafood and at the same time enjoy the beautiful seaview. Price is a bit expensive but that depends on the type of seafood that you order.
