Many dessert outlets are sprouting across Penang Island and one popular one is Hui Lau Shan. This Hong Kong’s dessert chain journeyed to Penang with its first location in Gurney Plaza. The healthy dessert outlet has since been attracting stream of customers.

The attraction at Hui Lau Shan (HLS) is mango and its menu offers a whole wide range of selections of this tropical fruit. According to senior manager Yvonne Tan, the outlet is using two varieties of quality mango. One is the golden water lily mango from Thailand and the other from Philippines. Each variety is slightly different in flavor, with the sweetness of Thai mangoes for the ice blended and aromatic Philippines mango for topping.

At the food review, we are offered many tempting sweet desserts and not to mention some savory ones.

Fruitties Combo Series
The Fresh Fruitties Sweetie Ball with Double Juices (RM14.90) is an eye-appealing colourful dish. One can choose from a selection of juices which include watermelon, coconut, honeydew melon, mango, papaya and cantaloupe with a fragrant smell.

This dessert is presented with watermelon and mango juice together with glutinous rice balls. The natural sweetness of both the juices was delicious eaten with the chewy glutinous rice balls and the fruit balls.

Sushi Tei, the international Japanese Sushi Restaurant Chain which originates from Singapore is now opened in Penang. Located in Gurney Plaza, the dining place with a touch of Japanese interior has a great sea view. The signature open-kitchen concept is also seen in this outlet.

The menu offers one dish meal, ramen, sushi, sashimi, tempura, rolls and grill dishes. I adore the sashimi with four different types of raw fish, garnished with lemon slices. The fresh yellow-tail, salmon and butterfish goes well with wasabi but the marbled tuna belly is best eaten on its own. This highly prized fish is also available in a single plate with five thick pieces per order.

The Cape @Pulau Tikus, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Non-Halal, Penang, Pulau Tikus, Restaurant

 * This outlet has since closed down in 2012.

If you are looking for simple, wholesome meals in Pulau Tikus, a good choice would be The Cape. The restaurant which was once located in Gurney Plaza has since shifted to a two storey shoplot, at the junction of Burma Road and Cantonment Road.

The menu offers healthy dishes cooked with chicken, fish, and pork. For starters, we had the aromatic garlic meat dumpling and the Mansion ham rolls (RM6.90). The pan-fried dumpling was good dipped in the soy sauce vinegar mixture with ginger strips. The Mansion ham rolls had the ham wrapped up in a meat parcel. One serving comes with four large pieces and a dipping sauce.

*** Update:  Kozue has closed

My first post for the New (Niu) Year 2009! Finally settled back into routine after days of eating & celebrating…

I’m sure the majority of you had a dining experience in Gurney Plaza, Penang, no matter if it was Nandos, Manhattan Fish Market, Food Loft or something else. However, if you are craving for Japanese food of a different kind compared to Sakae Sushi or Sushi King, perhaps you can head over to Kozue Japanese Restaurant that sits on the 3rd floor of this shopping complex. This new outlet, which is situated just beside Kim Gary HK Cafe, opened in December last year and has a nice water feature at the entrance.

The colourful menu shows a lot of variety ranging from tempura to sushi and udon and has the descriptions of all the dishes. With just the two of us, hubby and myself went for a light meal.

Ajisen Ramen – Gurney Plaza Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Japanese Cuisine, Noodles

***The restaurant has since closed down.

This is a new food outlet that our parents and us happen to stumble upon in Gurney Plaza. It serves noodles and snacks.
The menu has a wide range of noodles and side dishes. We had a few side dishes together with our noodles. – The Salmon Sashimi, Fried Tofu and Pan Fried Gyoza (with soy-vinegar dipping sauce).

There are many variations of noodles to choose from. We tried out three different types. This is the Volcano Ramen – noodles served in a bowl of soup with big slices of meat, half an egg, seaweed and spicy mince meat.

Seafood Ramen consists of four big prawns, half an egg, crab stick, cuttle fish and seaweed.

Stewed tender pork ribs, half an egg and cabbage makes up this bowl of Nan-Kotsu Ramen. The soup is cloudly white.

This is our only rice item – Una Ju rice set. The unagi is nicely done.

Hubby looking happy and pleased. The prices were reasonable and most important of all, the food were fresh and the noodles were of the right texture. We even received a free gift from them too. Definitely a place to visit for a quick lunch or dinner.
