This time around our Penang food outing in the Mainland continue with Teochew cuisines at the popular Restaurant Chao Zhou. This Teochew style restaurant also serves a wide selection of dim sum for breakfast and numerous cuisines for lunch and dinner. I chanced upon it through its restaurant website. Heard that their dim sum is very popular too. Together with my In-laws, we made the trip to this restaurant which is located in Chai Leng Park, Penang Mainland. The restaurant has a large air-conditioned dining hall and a pleasant outdoor sitting area.

Straight to the dishes we indulged that evening!

We started with the superb deep fried items. There is a good variety to choose from and varies based on the customer choices. We had three different types of items, with the fried cho, ku chye kueh and prawns wrap with crisp vermicelli. All the deep fried items were served hot and crispy…very fragrant. Excellent appetizer to kick off the meal.

Penang Hawker Food – Lorbak @Kheng Pin

Posted by: CK Lam    in Georgetown, Hawker, Lorbak, Penang

Another Penang food that most people enjoyed eating is the Penang Lorbak. It is an appetizer, a side dish of fried mixed stuff of fish fritters, fried beancurd, spring rolls, fried octopus, preserved century eggs and the lorbak roll.

The lorbak roll itself consists of chunky bites of marinated five spiced pork wrapped with bean curd skin (fu-pei). All these are eaten with a dipping of chili sauce and thick starchy lor sauce with beaten egg swirls.

Fried Tai Loke Mee with pieces of meat, prawns, vegetables and pork lard (chu yau cha) can be eaten almost everywhere in K.L. but finding one in Penang can be quite difficult. Recently we managed to find the stall in Tong Hooi Coffeeshop along Datuk Kramat Road that specializes in cooking this noodle.

The ‘thick’ noodles is fried with black soy sauce under a fiery stove. It comes steaming hot. The taste of this noodle is enhanced with the spicy sambal belacan added to it.

We had another bowl of Tai Loke Mee cooked in a thick soup …. tasted good especially eaten with a dash of black vinegar. Both of these noodles are comparable as good as those I used to enjoyed during my earlier years in Kuala Lumpur

We also had the Mee Suah Kor which is cooked the same way as the above Tai Loke Mee.

This coffeeshop is just beside The Clark Hatch Fitness Center. In the morning, you get to savour the Stadium Curry Mee from the stall located in front of if. Directly opposite is Kafe Khoon Hiang, whereby you get to savour the famous Ah Leng Char Koay Teow.
