A friend tipped me off to a coffee shop serving hand-pulled noodles on the busy Macalister Road. This fairly new stall offers freshly hand-pulled noodles (la mian) and koay teow th’ng. Other specialties include homemade prawn wanton and fish balls.

The owner Mr Loh starts his day by making the hand-pulled noodles at the kitchen. The hand-pulled noodles have a certain tenderness and texture, which is greatly distinct from mass made noodles. The noodle is available in two sizes – either thick rounded or string-thin. Mr Loh quoted that the texture and mouth feel of the noodles are as important as flavor!

We had several varieties, starting with the spicy “ma la” noodle, which is the highlight in 173. Mr Loh had the hand-pulled noodles dipped in boiling water. The blanched fine noodle is served with black sauce with a dollop of chili-red paste (also handmade), a Sichuan specialty with heat of chilies and numbing Sichuan peppercorns.

Priced at RM3.50, the dish comes with pieces of BBQ pork (char siew), chicken, fish balls, vegetables and aromatic chili paste. With the right thickness and nice chewy bite, the noodles absorbed every drop of robust flavor from the spicy and tingly chili paste. For those who prefer less spicy, be sure to inform Mr Loh.

Annathai-Kitchen, tucked away in bustling Pulau Tikus Market, has started drawing in the crowd with its economy rice (mixed rice) or ‘chap fun’ the Cantonese calls it. It offers an array of affordable tasty Thai dishes, that is unlike any other in George Town.

The simple eatery is run by Jacky Choong and its kitchen is helmed by his mother, Anna. It is open for breakfast and lunch. Customers are spoiled for choices of dishes displayed in the economy rice stall with its selection of chicken, fish, sauteed vegetables, noodles and dessert.

*** Updated on 1/5/2011 – The coffee shop has since been taken over by a new owner.

One of my favorite breakfast joints in Penang is Eng Loh Coffee Shop in the heart of Georgetown. It is located at the end of Church Street, diagonally across the Pinang Peranakan Mansion and is exceptionally crowded during lunch hour.

Besides serving good coffee, the coffee shop operator also serves choices of Western breakfast of sausages and egg together with toast bread. There are ten over choices of bread and my favorite is the Roti Taiwan.

***The restaurant has since closed down.

Many of you would definitely be familiar with Hot Wok! The name is associated with the abundant of Nyonya food coupled with beautiful decorations and authentic Peranakan ambiance.

Customers who have frequented the restaurant in Penang knows that Hot Wok Nyonya & Local Cuisine has established itself as the premier restaurant in serving authentic Peranakan or commonly known as Nyonya food from its earlier years in Gurney Plaza and later shifted to Tanjung Tokong. Now they still continue serving their customers in a double storey pre-war house along Jalan Burma, near to the many food eateries of Nagore Road and New World Park.

Recently, a few food bloggers and I were given a warm welcome into Yishensu Restaurant located in 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya. This restaurant with an inviting and pleasant ambiance serves many choices of wholesome and hearty vegetarian dishes, noodles and sweets. It is very popular with shoppers and also the residence living around the area.

Another outlet for authentic Hokkien dishes in Penang is in an old shophouse on the ground floor of the Macallum flats. Restaurant Hock Chuan Heong is not visible from the main road but still walkable distance to the main road, whereby you will find Hock Seng Rojak, my favorite rojak stall.

Hock Chuan Heong is one of the places with good Hokkien dishes that come with reasonable prices. As expected, the place was crowded as it was lunch hour. The choices of dishes are very limited as they concentrate on their few specialties, just like what you will find in Ang Hoay Loh and Sin Lean Heang. The first dish was the aromatic and tasty Oh Chien (fried oyster omelette) with its starchy texture.

A Saturday lunch was at Ang Hoay Loh which occupied the corner garden space of the State Chinese (Penang) Association in Perak Road. This restaurant is an icon for some of Penang’s most authentic cuisines. I was  recommended to try out their specialty Hokkien dishes by my reader, Sky in my earlier post at Sin Lean Heang (another Hokkien restaurant) located in Goh Tiau Lor.

For some of the best of Penang’s hawker food and snacks, pay a visit to Cintra Street – a bustling street located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Entrance to this one way street is via Jalan Dr. Lim Chwee Leong. Its located in the same vicinity as KOMTAR and Prangin Mall. You will be able to find many varieties of foods and snacks, from dawn to dusk.

As you stroll along this narrow street, you will find the famed Yau Char Kuai stall on your left. They used to run the stall on the ground floor of the People’s Park flats just behind this street. However, I reckon they moved out to the main road so that its more accessible to the public. Its available from late morning till night. They even supply it to other hawkers as well, especially to those selling porridge, bak kut teh and tong-sui.

Amazingly, the Yau Char Kuai (sometimes known as You Tiu) maintains its crisp nature even after a few hours. Definitely the makings of a good teatime, served with a cup of kopi-o kau.

The culinary journey continues! Wen Chang Hainan Chicken Rice shop; located just right opposite, sells traditional Hainanese Chicken Rice. Roast chicken, white chicken and loh bak are just part of its items. Other than chili sauce, they do have the grinded ginger which is a nice complement to go with white chicken.

This stall was previously located a stone’s throw away from the Dumpling shop (read below) and has since made it big; relocating to this shop of their own.

Right beside the chicken rice shop is Ng Kee Cake Shop. This bakery shop sells a wide selection of freshly baked Cantonese biscuits and snacks. They also accept orders of the biscuits for special occasion – birthdays and weddings. I do drop in once in a while to treat myself to a box of pepper biscuit. The biscuit is crunchy with nuts, sesame seed and pepper powder.

A few doors down the bakery shop, you will come across the all time favourite Dim Sum shop, De Tai Tong Cafe. Dim Sum is served during breakfast and dinner, while there is an ala-carte menu for lunch. For noodle lovers, do try out their noodle – Yee Foo Meen, Char Hor Fan and Hong Toh Meen.

P1050530

Opposite the dim sum cafe is a small stall selling pancake and steam rice cake. It may look modest and simple, but I reckon this stall sells the best Ham Chim Pang & Pak Tong Goe in Penang. Among the few varieties of Ham Chim Pang ranging from sweet tau sar, with five spice powder and with glutinous rice.

P1050881

Just look at the amount of five spice powder which gives it a slightly salty taste. Been having it for years now, and still enjoying it every time. :D

If you happen to be in town earlier in the evening, you can buy it directly from their shop which is just located behind De Tai Tong Dim Sum cafe. Of course its always fresher when its just out of the frying pan.

Across the junction of Cintra/Campbell, you will see the popular Dumpling shop – Cintra Food Corner on your left. This place is famous for its bak chang, tau chang, yam cakes and red bean tong-sui boiled with dried Mandarin peel. Environment is much better now since it has shifted into this shop as compared to its earlier trading days by the roadside.

Two doors away from the ‘chang’ shop is the Curry Chee Cheong Fun stall. You get to savour this curry version with tender pieces of chicken (only drumstick) and soft potato for RM3.50. The spicy flavors of the curry chicken makes this a delicious meal. You are allowed to bring the CCF and consume it in the ‘chang’ shop :)

Spoilt for choices? Me too! Which food are you going to have, the next time you visit Cintra Street? No matter which,  Happy Eating!

Updated on  14/10/2010 : There are two more food outlets just opposite the CCF – the chu char at Sun Yoon Kee Restaurant and the neighbouring chicken and fish porridge.

Eng Loh – Peanut Butter Toast

Posted by: CK Lam    in Georgetown, Hawker, Penang, Roti Bakar

Peanut Butter !!! There are many varieties of peanut butter. I have been using peanut butter as a spreader since ……can’t even remember when. I loved the Skippy creamy ones although I sometimes have the extra chunky version too. Another favourite of mine is Smucker’s black current and strawberry. They make a tasty spread for bread as well as cream cracker.

Besides making peanut butter toast at home, my hubby and myself like to eat those sold at Eng Loh coffee shop located at Church Street. The bread is known as Taiwan Roti and the thick slice is sold for RM3.50. The main ingredients is margarine, peanut butter and crushed peanuts. The bread is the ordinary fresh white bread which is sliced into very thick pieces. It is toasted with a layer of margarine. Peanut butter is then spread on to the melted margarine with crushed peanuts sprinkled on top.

The warm crusty bread and the stickiness of the peanut butter is delicious. On the first bite, it tends to stick to the gums…. and glue the jaws together for few seconds.

And not forgetting a hot cup of kopi-o kau that goes hand in hand with the toast. Super breakfast :P

Finding it difficult to choose where to have nice and tasty hawker food? Well, there is this coffeeshop that we used to patronized quite often because it has a lot of stalls selling tasty and reasonably price food.

To savour the yummy hawker food, drop by Keat Seng coffeeshop at night. It is located at the junction of Jalan Ayer Itam and Reservior Road. Recently the shop was renovated and given a new coat of paint – much brighter and cleaner. In the daytime there is a car wash operating at the open space in front of the coffeeshop.

Fried oyster is only RM 5.00 with fresh oyster

This curry mee is RM 3.70 (extra chicken) – very flavorful

Fried “tai loke meen” at RM 3.50, still not as good as those sold in KL

A basic plate of nasi lemak with tasty ikan bills and long beans.

This is one place whereby you can find most of the hawker food – Satay, Chee Cheong Fun, Chicken Porridge, Char Koay Kak, CKT, Wanton mee, dumpling, tong sui, claypot rice, Loh bak, and economy beehoon.
