Tucked in the heart of George Town’s Noordin Street is Little Kitchen @ Nyonya. The charming restaurant housed in an old two storey shophouse with a distinctive heritage façade, serves home-cooked Nyonya dishes.

Happy Duan Wu Festival to everyone!

The Duan Wu festival is celebrated on every 5th day of the 5th month, and it falls on June 23 this year. During this festival, many will be busy preparing the chang (glutinous rice dumpling), and with many people buying them.

In Penang the chang is sold commercially all year round in a number of places, and one such place is Cintra Food Corner. For generations, the Lor’s family has been dishing out the chang for customers to dine-in and take-away. Once located at the road side of the bustling Cintra Street, owner Lor Onn Kee has since shifted the business to a nearby shop house in 2006.

Chapati in Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chapati, Georgetown, Hawker, Indian Cuisine, Penang

Chapati is a very tasty and filling flatbread, especially when paired with vegetable or meat curries. Although this Penang hawker food is a staple in the Indian diet, this savory food is hugely popular with other races too.

Koay Teow Th’ng, also commonly known as KTT is a popular hawker food for Penangites besides the overwhelmingly famous Char Koay Teow, Assam Laksa and Hokkien Mee. Lately I have been patronizing the Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng at Lum Lai located in Cecil Street Market Hawker Center, just beside the bustling Cecil Street Market. This street is also known as Chit Tiau Lor to Penangites which represent the 7th Road in that precinct.

Chicken rice can be found in most hawker stalls and food courts in Penang as the chicken rice is a popular and favorite food for many of us. There is one exceptional stall that sells Hainan Chicken Rice – Thai style located in a corner coffee shop along Penang Road. It is directly opposite KOMTAR Tower and a few shops away from Kek Seng which is famous for its durian ice cream and ice kacang.

A Saturday lunch was at Ang Hoay Loh which occupied the corner garden space of the State Chinese (Penang) Association in Perak Road. This restaurant is an icon for some of Penang’s most authentic cuisines. I was  recommended to try out their specialty Hokkien dishes by my reader, Sky in my earlier post at Sin Lean Heang (another Hokkien restaurant) located in Goh Tiau Lor.

Just mention Goh Huat Seng Restaurant and usually one word come to mind… Steamboat! Having been around for more than 50 years, it is one of the oldest Teochew restaurants in Penang. Situated in the folds of Kimberley Street, many things have changed since the old days but one thing’s for sure… the traditional steamboat still comes lighted up with charcoal.

Penang Hawker Food – Lorbak @Kheng Pin

Posted by: CK Lam    in Georgetown, Hawker, Lorbak, Penang

Another Penang food that most people enjoyed eating is the Penang Lorbak. It is an appetizer, a side dish of fried mixed stuff of fish fritters, fried beancurd, spring rolls, fried octopus, preserved century eggs and the lorbak roll.

The lorbak roll itself consists of chunky bites of marinated five spiced pork wrapped with bean curd skin (fu-pei). All these are eaten with a dipping of chili sauce and thick starchy lor sauce with beaten egg swirls.

I am sure many of you have eaten Penang Hokkien Mee as it is one of the favourite hawker food in Penang. However have you ever had pork knuckle (tu kar bak) with your steaming bowl of Hokkien Mee?  If not, then hop over to the stall located in Presgrave Street (Sah Tiau Lor – 3rd Street) which serves this tender pork knuckle meat. The tender meat is only sliced out from the drum when required to maintain its moist meaty texture.

This stall does have a varieties of other add-on (kae liau) ingredients such as intestines (hoon chiang), spare ribs, boiled pig skin, roast pork and fishball. Among my must-haves every time I pay a visit are the pork knuckle, intestines and pig skin!

Starview Restaurant, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Penang Restaurant

Starview Restaurant which has been around for years is located right in the busy junction of Burma Road and Jalan Telekom. Well, most Penangites will know it as the “every night also packed restaurant”. Its quite phenomenal actually, other restaurants in Penang have come around and gone but Starview has survived the decades strongly.
Since it is usually packed at night, we decided to give it a shot during lunch time. Fortunately for us, we manage to get a table as well as a carpark. Its been a while since we had a meal there, so we were unsure about their signature dishes.
The captain recommended the fish hotpot (Hu Lor) and my son was eager to give it a try. The hotpot of soup comes with pieces of fried fish and tofu. Two plates of freshly prepared raw fish slices comes with generous servings of vegetables.

This is the delicious and tasty hot bowl of fish soup.

We had the hotpot together with two other dishes…..Steamed Chicken with oyster sauce and the very appetising dish of Brinjal with ‘sambal hei bee’ (chilli dried prawns).

Overall a nice and satisfying lunch….
