His journey in this 13-part series with Makansutra, takes him to hawker stalls, restaurants and street food carts in several locations in Malaysia – from Penang, through Ipoh, her capital Kuala Lumpur, a tiny seaside town Sekinchan, Johor Baru and Singapore.

The Food Surprise shows the moments when he gets thrown out, wakes up a restaurant manager from her late noon siesta, and gets in line, like everyone else, for a 20 minute wait for his food.

I had the opportunity to be his dining guide during the filming in Penang. It was a great time, seeing the happenings behind-the-scene.

The Food Surprise will also makes its debut on TLC (Starhub Channel 427) every Monday in Singapore at 10.30pm.

* Many thanks to Makansutra for laying on this invitation.

Transfer Road Roti Canai

Posted by: CK Lam    in Georgetown, Halal, Hawker, Mamak/Indian, Penang

Roti canai is available in numerous stalls around Penang and each stall has its own variations such as the roti sardin, roti telur and the paper-thin roti tissue. They serve it with their own curry dishes, from the simple dall curry to the meaty curry.

In my recent post on Isaribi Tei Japanese Restaurant, I received plenty of comments and feedbacks from my readers on other Japanese food and restaurants too. One of them is the Kirishima Japanese Restaurant, situated in the lobby level of Cititel Hotel, Penang. We visited this restaurant which is known through word of mouth as one of the best Japanese restaurant in town!

We were guided to our seat in the main dining hall. Browsing through their huge and colorful menu, we noticed that Kirishima does offer a wide variety of Japanese dishes. We placed our orders and while waiting for the food, we were given a cold towel to freshen up.

We had this King Prawn Roll @RM24 – Deep fried king prawn rolled with salmon and avocado. Indeed, this dish was skillfully prepared and presented as well! This combination of fruit, fish roe and seafood was very tasty.

In Penang, beef noodles are very hard to come by. There are only a handful of stalls selling beef noodles compare to other hawker food. For us, our regular joint is the stall located at Beach/Chulia intersection.

Besides beef noodle, we also like  the Hakka style beef ball noodle. From what we gather, this is the only stall selling this delicious noodle in town. The bowl of dried noodle is topped up with stewed minced beef cooked in dark soya sauce. Additional items of spring roll and bean curd can be added too. We usually go for the dried koay teow and loh sui fan.

The dried noodle comes with a bowl of clear soup with ten springy beef balls and plenty of fresh parsley. The soup tasted superbly good with an added dash of pepper.

This delicious bowl of beef ball noodle cost RM4 and is only available for breakfast till lunch at Hoe Ping coffee shop located at Penang Road/Kampung Malabar. Try to be there early because the additional items are sold out pretty fast. This coffee shop offers two more yummy hawker food, lobak (available for the whole day) and bak moi (only at night). Rainforest Bakery

Posted by: CK Lam    in Bakery, Dessert, Georgetown, Penang

The first meal to start the day is having breakfast and what’s more with bread products. We find it nutritious and it goes well with various spreads, both sweet and savory or with meats, cheeses, and vegetables.

Recently we found out about Rainforest Bakery, located along Chulia Street in George Town, Penang.

All the bakery products are preservative free. The proprietor, Mr Tan Boo Geok and his wife is very friendly and goes to great length to share with the customers the different types of healthy and organic bread. The bakers are their twin sons, Jerry and Jesse.

There are  abundant choices of bread made from rye and seeded products too. Do check out the many choices – Ciabatta (RM6.30), English Bloomer (RM4.20), Poppy Seed Bloomer (RM5.20), English Muffin (RM4.50), Volkron Brot (RM8.80), French Baguette (RM3.90), Cinnamon Roll (RM1.70), English Scone (RM5) and Foccacia (RM3.70).

Nowadays we have been patronising this bakery whenever we need to replenish our supply of bread.

Click here for the Map Location (updated 29/5/09). Business Hour:  Monday to Saturday from 9am till 8pm. Tel: 04 2614641
