There is a rare place serving piping hot bowls of Cantonese style dessert or tong-sui in Penang. The desserts not only satisfy your sweet cravings, its charming surroundings will also amaze you.

This nameless stall is located right in the heart of George Town. The business which started many years ago is now run by the second generation owner from the yard of his house on Victoria Street.

*** Updated on 1/5/2011 – The coffee shop has since been taken over by a new owner.

One of my favorite breakfast joints in Penang is Eng Loh Coffee Shop in the heart of Georgetown. It is located at the end of Church Street, diagonally across the Pinang Peranakan Mansion and is exceptionally crowded during lunch hour.

Besides serving good coffee, the coffee shop operator also serves choices of Western breakfast of sausages and egg together with toast bread. There are ten over choices of bread and my favorite is the Roti Taiwan.

Something new to start off a great 2010!

In a blink of an eye, 2009 has come to a close and 2010 has begun! I am kicking off the new year with our Penang’s very own famed Tau Sar Pneah and more!

There are several well known brands of Tau Sar Pneah in Penang. The outlets that many outstation visitors would normally visit would be Ghee Hiang and Him Heang. However, there are also some less known brands; among them is Eaton Kuih Centre in Batu Lanchang!

* This article was also published in the New Straits Times on 9th April 2010.

Nyonya Kuih can be found in most of the wet market around Georgetown. They come in many different texture, shapes and multi colored. They are mostly steamed with some deep fried and baked.

I got to enjoy some freshly made kuih at Kuih Nyonya Moh Teng Pheow located in Jalan Mesjid, Off Chulia Street. The owner, Mr Mook and his family has been making the Nyonya Kuihs and supplying them to kuih peddlers for many years in Penang but nowadays they just cater to the hotels and directly walk-in customers.

We came across some good and tasty hawker food in Taman Emas coffee shop located directly opposite the Penang Chinese Girl’s High School. This corner lot coffee shop on the busy Gottlieb Road is well known for its Assam Laksa.  Besides that we also got to try out the food from the other stalls.

This plate of Char Koay Teow (RM3) comes with slices of Chinese Sausages and  a few prawns. Fried till just right, not too oily, it tasted prefect with few drops of soy sauce.

* Update – The place has closed down!

Recently, a few of the Penang Food Bloggers were invited to a food tasting & review of Miss Saigon, Penang. This trendy Vietnamese restaurant located at the prime area of E-Gate with bustling atmosphere faces the Jelutong Expressway with the view extending out to the Penang Bridge. It was an opportunity for us to discover some unique Vietnamese cuisine, and also having able to taste all the food in this restaurant’s recently revamped menu. The new menu, which is pork free has a total of thirty-one new items with varieties ranging from salad, rice noodles, sandwiches and summer rolls.

I would like to add in a word of compliments to the Management of Miss Saigon for their innovative and forward thinking. I have come to know that the restaurant previously did not receive a lot of positive comments. As a pro-active team management, they have constructively used the feedback from the  bloggers to improve their menu and the restaurant as a whole.
