It is spring time and we see the highly prized white asparagus featured on the menus of fine dining restaurants in Penang.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang has the imported ‘royal vegetable’ highlighted in the Feringgi Grill. The fine dining restaurant serves an a la carte menu offering diners the chance to try many of Chef De Cuisine, Matthias Tretbar’s white asparagus dishes.

It is always nice to see my work in print. This time around my article was published in the Hong Kong Express’s airline UO Magazine, which covers lifestyle topics – travel, leisure, shopping, food adventure and people. The airline, a Hainan Airlines’ subsidiary company has opened a new route to Penang on 27 October 2013.

I was first approached by personnel from Ink, a Singpaore-based publisher to write a story on Penang’s Top10 Eating Experiences. The food story including colourful photos was eventually featured in the inaugural issue of the magazine (December 2013).

Miam Miam Penang set up in Gurney Paragon has a reputation of serving fusion cuisine that incorporates both French and Japanese flavor.

Having garnered a following since its opening, the restaurant has recently launched a revised menu. Together with some friends, we revisit the restaurant. And while I can’t say I loved every aspect of Miam Miam main plates on my first visit, my experience on this visit is far different.

Diners will be pleased with the opening of Nona Bali Restaurant at Promenade 28, in Sungai Pinang, Penang. Owned by partners Peter Tait and I Made Sudiarta, Nona Bali is the place for Balinese food cravings in Penang.

The restaurant thrives on set meals throughout lunch and a la carte menu for dinner. While there is no pork on the menu, the restaurant in a casual and comfortable environment offers a variety of seafood, poultry and vegetables. The dishes are prepared combining Balinese culinary traditions. “I source the ingredients locally and from neighbouring Indonesia and Thailand. No MSG and food enhancer is used,”said Sudiarta who heads the kitchen.

The Jawi House Cafe Gallery, offers an eclectic Jawi Peranakan (Straits Muslim) interior with a comfortable atmosphere to entertain friends and family.

Located on Armenian Street in the heritage zone of George Town, Penang, the cafe is owned by Datuk Dr Wazir Jahan Karim, an anthropologist and culture conservationist.

Although Wazir is a good cook herself, having learned from her mother, she often leaves food preparation at the restaurant to her son and head chef Nurilkarim Razha.

Our eyes were drawn to the newly opened Asiatique Kitchen & Lounge in Tanjung Tokong, Penang. The kitchen helmed by young Aldrien Moh offers Modern Australian cooking, with food prepared combining Asian flavors into French cooking techniques.

We were at the fusion theme place for a weekday lunch after it had opened, and we returned recently for dinner.

Tuck into the Chinese New Year Prosperity set menus with traditional-style dishes crafted by chef de cuisine Chiam Choon Heng and his team at Sesame + Soy Pan Asian Chinese Cuisine restaurant, at G Hotel, Penang.

The six-course Year of the Horse Prosperity set dinner comes with two menus priced at RM98++ and RM128++ per person. “This menu is suitable for any number of people,” said Chiam.
