Goku Raku Ramen brings their specialty Horikiri style ramen to their new outlet in Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang. Located on the east wing of the building, Goku Raku Ramen is the latest branch opened by the Texchem group in Penang.

The ramen comes with three types of soups – Tonkotsu (pork-based), Shoyu Tonkotsu (Japanese soy sauce) and Miso Tonkotsu. The freshly made broths are simmered for 17 to 30 hours by Chef Kenji Nakagawa who leads the kitchen.

The signature dish  is  aptly named Goku Raku Ramen, and comes in a rich broth consisting of a complex blend of pork, chicken and fish which is simmered for 30 hours. Both the large (RM23.90) and small (RM18.90) servings are topped with char siew slices, flavoured egg, onions, Japanese leeks, bamboo shoots and seaweed. The texture of the fresh noodle is slightly springy. The ramen in Shoyu Tonkotsu broth is served with a swirl of fragrant garlic oil  giving it an appetising aroma.

Sawara Restaurant is located in a corner shop house along busy Burma Road in Pulau Tikus area. Its main focus is on its fish steamboat and homemade Yong Tau Fu where the fish paste is made from mackerel fish. There are not many restaurants in town making their own fish paste nowadays.

Fancy having a bowl of piping hot seafood beehoon or pork porridge? I had my share over at Lam Kei located in Nam Thean coffee shop along the busy Jalan Jelutong. This stall has been around for thirty-five years with the second generation taking over now. They have another stall selling this similar food inside Kedai Kopi Leong Huat Seng in Sungai Tiram, near to the Penang Airport.

Lately we get to see a lot of bungalows in Penang being renovated into restaurants and cafes. A heritage bungalow opposite The Gurney Hotel in bustling Kelawei Road has since been renovated into a restaurant. This new outlet, Perut Rumah serves Nyonya cuisine or better known as Peranakan Food. This type of cuisine is getting more and more popular in Penang. My in-laws went with us for dinner to try out the Nyonya cuisine of this restaurant.

A sense of nostalgia enveloped as soon as you drive into the drive way of the building.

The restaurant is very charming and tastefully decorated. The walls are adorned with black and white family photos, clock and framed mirror. In a corner stands a cupboard with collectibles. Seating was vast and comfy while cleanliness takes the top spot. All these gives the place an upmarket appeal.

The manager of the restaurant gave us a warm welcome and sat us down. There is so much to choose from the menu and we ended up ordering several dishes that most Nyonya food lovers are familiar with.

We started the meal with a spicy and sweet salad of Kerabu Bokyee (black fungus)….very appetizing dish.

Hong Bak …. pieces of lean pork and potatoes stewed until tender with spices in a flavorful gravy. Recommended !

Cincalok Pork – pork slices are stir fried with cincalok (a sour and salty shrimp based condiment), chillies and onions for that savory taste.

The main ingredients of Joo Hoo Char consist of cuttle fish (joo hoo), yam bean (sengkuang) and carrots. All these are cut into fine strips and stir-fried for a longer time, giving it a drier texture and flavour. Best eaten with some sambal belacan.

Nyonya Fish Curry….the curry gravy is less aromatic. I would have prefer it with more spices and laksa flower.

Packets of Hu Pau (otak-otak) …. pieces of fish marinated in spices wrapped in banana leaf and served steaming hot.

Speciality dish of Perut Ikan – hubby commended there was only a few pieces of the pickled fish stomach thus finding the taste a bit flat but nonetheless,  it is still worth giving this a try.

We rounded up our meal with the dessert. The sweetness of this bowl of coconut milk with orange/yellow colour sweet potatoes, yam, beans and jelly starch is just right. It would be perfect if the coconut milk is a little more richer and lemak.

The food are fresh and not over spicy as they do cater to foreigners who were seen occupying two tables besides us on that night. This meal for five cost RM130 which is quite acceptable as this type of food requires a lot of preparation work.

The ambience and atmosphere of Perut Rumah makes it a suitable place for entertaining friends and visiting guests. The business hours are from 11am – 3pm & 6pm -10pm (daily).

Yam rice for lunch? Yes,of course. How could I resist when my hubby suggested it. There are a few places in Butterworth selling it but we still prefer to frequent the stall in Bukit Mertajam, located behind Jalan Kulim. The stall is based in Kedai Makanan Hing Hing at Lorong Melor. It serves yam rice, preserved salted vegetable pork soup, stew soya sauce pork trotter as well as stew tofu and egg. Not to miss out the special chili paste with thick black sauce.

That’s a choice of having white rice or yam rice but most customers will opt for the latter. The rice is boiled with the yam (which is why the rice is so fragrant). The yam is soft and creamy…and I love to have more pieces of it.
Ordered two bowls of soup that comes with chinese celery and preserved salted vegetable. First bowl was mix ingredients of pork organs – stomach, liver, pork slices and meatballs. The other bowl consist of rectangular pieces of pig blood (congealed pig blood). Its jelly like structure is very smooth like tofu.

We also had the stew pork trotter as a side dish.

Up to now, we still can’t find any stalls selling this dish in the island…. so whenever we feel like having yam rice, we will take a short journey up to BM to enjoy this delicious food.

UPDATES :

* The stall has shifted to a new coffee shop located just nearby the old place. Do drop by Eleen blog’s for a detailed map to this place.
