With its multiracial culture, Penang is a melting pot for lip-smacking cuisine. One great example would be the Mamak Mee Goreng, which some label as a “to-die-for” meal of its own. Mee Goreng served in Penang is slightly different from the rest of the nation. Apart from the usual ingredients such as bean sprouts, boiled potatoes, shrimp cake, egg and tofu, dried cuttlefish is also used, which makes Penang Mee Goreng stands out from the rest.

Just the mention of Mee Goreng and most locals will point you to the heart of Pulau Tikus, Penang. The Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng is legendary and people from all walks of life have been patronising this place for decades.

Hawker food features prominently in the culinary culture in the state of Penang. Across the industry there are always places that constantly make headlines while others tend to be excellent but underrated, and the New Cathay Coffee Shop is classified as the latter.

Located along Lorong Kuching right off the ever bustling Burmah Road, this coffee shop is one of the decent places to sample a plethora of Penang’s street hawker fare. A favorite mostly with the locals, it begins to fill up as early as 7.30 in the morning and is absolutely packed during the peak hours of ten in the morning right through two in the afternoon.

For those opting for a lighter snack, the apom manis (Indian style pan cake) stall right beside the shop is an excellent alternative. Interestingly, the owner still maintains the tradition of using charcoal stoves and clay pots.

The Cape @Pulau Tikus, Penang

If you are looking for simple, wholesome meals in Pulau Tikus, a good choice would be The Cape. The restaurant which was once located in Gurney Plaza has since shifted to a two storey shoplot, at the junction of Burma Road and Cantonment Road.

The menu offers healthy dishes cooked with chicken, fish, and pork. For starters, we had the aromatic garlic meat dumpling and the Mansion ham rolls (RM6.90). The pan-fried dumpling was good dipped in the soy sauce vinegar mixture with ginger strips. The Mansion ham rolls had the ham wrapped up in a meat parcel. One serving comes with four large pieces and a dipping sauce.

Nestled within Bellisa Row in Penang’s bustling Pulau Tikus is Cassis, a fine dining restaurant. The cozy restaurant with a dining hall upstairs is decorated with a huge chandelier. Despite being only opened several months, Cassis is already drawing in the crowds and had garnered a following of diners.

Hubby and I recently enjoyed a six course set dinner in this restaurant which is helmed by the relatively young Chef Weng. His last stint was at Wino’s, Margaret River in Perth before coming back to Penang.

Sawara Restaurant is located in a corner shop house along busy Burma Road in Pulau Tikus area. Its main focus is on its fish steamboat and homemade Yong Tau Fu where the fish paste is made from mackerel fish. There are not many restaurants in town making their own fish paste nowadays.

If you are in Pulau Tikus area, you are most likely to see this signboard by the road side of the bustling Burma Road. It is indicating the newly opened stall selling salted chicken (yim gouk kai). It is located just one shop away from the Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng.

This stall is the branch out from its outlet in Joo Leong Cafe in Bayan Lepas (famous for its toast bread and half boiled eggs). The chicken is wrapped in “tracing paper” and baked in two woks filled with heated coarse salt.

A bird cost RM22 whereas half of it goes for RM11. The chicken is quite small size, considering it as the ‘kampung breed’ and has less fats compare to the normal chicken. The flesh of the chicken is very tender and tasty. The combination of salt and Chinese herb of  Dong Guai gives the meat a unique flavourable aroma and it goes well with rice.

***The restaurant has since closed down.

Com Viet which serves Vietnamese delicacies and cuisine is located in a quiet lane right in the buzzing suburb of Pulau Tikus. It is in the middle of the row of shoplots just behind Kassim Mustapha. I found out about this place from Pixen and decided to try out some of their cuisine.

The restaurant radiates a very pleasant feeling, coupled with strokes of Vietnamese culture.

By playing it safe, the first dish we ordered was the Fresh Spring Roll. We have eaten this appetizer at Mekong on our Melbourne trip. Chicken meat, prawns and vegetables are wrapped in transparent rice paper and eaten by dipping into the sauce. A plate of six rolls cost RM12.

We had the Bun Bo Nam Bo which comes with lots of fresh vegetables and herbs …. beef with laksa noodles, mint, coriander, bean sprout and garnished with crushed peanuts. This huge bowl of noodle (RM12) is very tasty with the special sauce which gives the dish an extra kick.

A fabulous dish of sliced stuffed pork leg (Chan Gio Nhoi) served with fish sauce and lime juice cost RM15. The meat is very well flavoured and delicious.

After the meal, we had a cup of Vietnamese Coffee. It is interesting to watch and wait as the coffee goes through the dripping process in the charming peculator. The hot water in the little teapot is poured into the coffee powder in the metal container. The coffee will then drip into the cup below it. It has a unique flavour and tasted good with added condensed milk. It cost RM6.

The accompanying signature baked apple pie – the crispy texture of the freshly baked pie and the apple slices topped with cinnamon powder complemented each other very well.

Vietnamese food is healthy as it requires very little oil in its cooking. Just head over to this place for excellent Vietnamese food. Its location : 19, Lintang Burma, Pulau Tikus.

*** Updates (January 2009) : This restaurant which was closed for a short period of time is now reopen under the name, Saigon Kitchen Vietnamese Cuisine***
