I had the pleasure of attending a wine pairing dinner put together by G Hotel award winning Pan Asian restaurant Sesame and Soy and Katnook Estate. The gourmet food was prepared by chef de cuisine Chiam Choon Heng.

The wines sampled at the event included the Katnook Founder’s Block Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Katnook Founder’s Block Chardonnay 2010, Katnook Estate Shiraz 2009, Katnook Estate Chardonnay 2008 and Katnook Estate Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 2005.

Barone Ricasoli is available in selected Penang restaurants’ wine list!

A group of us had an enjoyable time sampling and learning about Barone Ricasoli wines at two different restaurants, Suffolk House and That Little Wine Bar. Both the chefs have prepared creations to match with the Italian wine which is distributed by Asiaeuro.

Below are several wines that are worth trying:
Brolio Chianti Classico 2009
Rocca Guicciarda Chianti Classico Reserva 2008
Casalferro IGT Toscana 2008
Castello Di Brolio Vin Santo 2004

On my hotel dining reviews in Kuala Lumpur, I have checked out several dining outlets in Renaissance Hotel Kuala Lumpur, and one of them was Med.@Marche-Live. The open concept restaurant offers a relaxed and casual dining atmosphere, with air-conditioned dining room and great terrace sitting.

These days, the restaurant brings a new dining experience to diners with the presence of Australian Paul Lewis as the Executive Sous Chef.  He took over the kitchen this year and has since made his debut in the MIGF 2010. We were privileged to meet up with the chef and at the same time sample some of his dishes from the menu, which focuses on unique Italian specialties and ‘comfort’ food!

Take a step into the past at Sri Malaya, an oasis of retro charm!

Tucked right in the heart of George Town, housed in a pre-World War II heritage building is the newly opened Sri Malaya Heritage Restaurant. This restaurant, conveniently located on Rope Walk, is near to the entrance from Chulia Street.

Last week, the Malaysian-German Society of Penang held their annual Christmas celebration and Bazaar  which is open to the public at their premises in Jalan Air Itam. Many programs were lined up for the event featuring the presence of  Santa Claus, piano performance,  story telling,  Christmas caroling and gourmet food.

Although there were no serving of turkey and Christmas pudding, they make it up by serving yummy smoked barbeque chicken and jumbo sausages. Potato salad and Sauerkraut made up the side dishes.

Starview Restaurant, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Georgetown, Penang, Penang Restaurant

The months of August always calls for a special celebration among our friends and families. Our three families have been having dinner gatherings to catch up with each other and generally just having a really great time together.

Our dinner with both of the Chong and Ding families was held in Starview Restaurant in Burmah Road. You may find my previous lunch outing post about this place, while yesterday’s gathering is a whole new perspective. Before I go on any further about the food, I would really like to thank KS and her family for making this dinner happen and also happy to meet up with GT and her family.

Many Penangites would somehow or rather been to this restaurant, which has stood the test of time. Since its conception, it has seen many other restaurants rise and fall, but Starview remains Penang’s favorite after all these years.

We were given the privilege to dine in their VIP rooms, thanks to Lisa who organized everything to perfection for KS. After much catching up and interaction, the first delicacy of the night was served. It was the Four Season’s Dish and I have to admit that every quarter held its own pristine flavor.

The four quarters combining into a perfect dish.

The selection of red wine on that night was just too sweet for words and it compliments  the cuisine very well. Unfortunately, I would not call myself a wine drinker and hence I ended up having only a glass for the whole night.

That’s me hogging the wine glasses :D

Each of us was served with an individual bowl of shark fin soup.

A fantastic fish dish prepared in two ways -  fish cutlets are sauteed with a medley of carrots, scallops, celery, waterchestnut and snowpeas. The remainder of the fish is deep fried till crisp.

Next came the tofu pieces stuffed with fillings, which is fried till golden brown. This dish is garnished with chopped pieces of red and green chili peppers. Indeed a very appetizing dish with the finely chopped chili strongly enhancing the aroma of the tofu.

Lastly, the fried noodles (mee-tiau) with prawns, chicken and mushroom slices. This noodle is not as refined as the ordinary ones, however it was equally superb. The QQ-ness of the noodle was such a tickle to the taste buds!

For dessert we had soy bean milk with black sesame glutinous rice ball  (tang yuen). The accompanying tang yuen was smooth and goes pretty well with the milk. A perfect dessert to end this sumptuous meal!

This is a snap shot of the mums as the dads were busy chatting away with each other. We have been good friends for such a long time, and I sincerely hope our friendships will be everlasting.

Our dinner feast ends with this spectacular photo depicting our three kids…oops, it should be our three ‘young’ men!

It is definitely a beautiful evening when one is with the wonderful company of good friends and family.

**UPDATE**

This ever famous Starview Restaurant on Penang island will be shifting to the New World Park on 8th of October 2008. This came as a shock to me as Starview has grown to become one of Penang’s famous Landmarks & Restaurant.

***The restaurant has since closed down.

In Penang, mee sua are sold in different variations such as ‘mee sua koh’, fried mee sua’ and ‘ark tui mee sua’. Recently we came across a stall selling a new found delicacy, ‘ang chew mee sua’ ????.

‘Ang Chew mee sua’ is actually rice vermicelli cooked in red fermented rice wine. It is considered a confinement food and also a dish for birthdays in the Foochow community.

The stall is found in the coffee shop located at the corner of Burma Road/Kedah Road junction. Another landmark that you can refer to is that this shop is right beside the famed Fatty Boy Chicken Rice.

The lady owner was kind to shared with us her expertise in preparing the red wine; from the fermentation of glutinous rice, red rice (in the plastic bottle) to the starter cake or commonly known as chou bang ??. The outcome of the residue is in the yellow container. To see how it is done in detail, click to Aunty Nee’s blog.

These are the pots of red wine chicken soup. The red colour appearance of the soup turned me off at the first glance but after tasting it, I truly find it very unique and enjoyed in immensely!

Every bowl of mee sua comes with a chicken drumstick. The texture of the mee sua is very fine and smooth. The full flavoured chicken soup is slightly sweet with a hint of liquor. We were recommended to have another bowl of mee sua with a hard boil egg – the lady told us that we should mix the egg yolk into the soup. It was very tasty and I couldn’t resist drinking up all the soup!

We really enjoyed the smooth mee sua. Forgot to mention, it cost only RM4.00 for a bowl of mee sua with chicken drumstick and only RM3.00 for the hard boil egg mee sua. If you are the adventurous type, do drop by this stall which is open from lunch till dinner.

***Updates (19/2/2009) : The coffee shop has already closed down and all the stalls have shifted out.
