KF Seetoh in The Food Surprise by what2seeonline.com

The Food Surprise shows the moments when he gets thrown out, wakes up a restaurant manager from her late noon siesta, and gets in line, like everyone else, for a 20 minute wait for his food.

I had the opportunity to be his dining guide during the filming in Penang. It was a great time, seeing the happenings behind-the-scene.

The Food Surprise will also makes its debut on TLC (Starhub Channel 427) every Monday in Singapore at 10.30pm.

* Many thanks to Makansutra for laying on this invitation.

Penang has a number of Korean BBQ restaurants and lately we saw the arrival of Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant in our shores. The outlet opened in the middle of May, less than a month ago occupies two shoplots in Penang Bayan Point. Daorae operates by the motto ‘the customers is always right’, thus their main objective is to provide good services to their customers. We had a hearty meal there recently.

Just mention Goh Huat Seng Restaurant and usually one word come to mind… Steamboat! Having been around for more than 50 years, it is one of the oldest Teochew restaurants in Penang. Situated in the folds of Kimberley Street, many things have changed since the old days but one thing’s for sure… the traditional steamboat still comes lighted up with charcoal.

Zhonghua Restaurant, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Chinese, Penang, Penang Restaurant, Pulau Tikus

Zhonghua Restaurant is located at One-Stop Midlands along Burma Road in Penang. It is on the first floor of the building, just right beside Berjaya Hotel. At the time of the dinner (last Saturday), the restaurant is offering a 50% promotion for its Peking Duck dish. This definitely is a bonus to those that loves this cuisine.

The dishes for the night were of course the Peking Duck, Black Pepper Duck, Mixed Vegetables and Spareribs.

The naked Peking duck with its crispy skin was sliced in front of us. It makes up a plate in which everyone of us gets a few pieces each.

The plate of crispy duck skin was served with a basket of pancakes, spring onions, cucumbers, carrot sticks and hoisin sauce. A bit oily but goes well with the pancake. This time around, we requested for the remaining duck to be fried with black pepper, a different way as compared to our previous Peking duck dish at Midland Court Restaurant.

This is the succulent Chinese Pork Spareribs, marinated tastefully with mouthwatering flavor.  We were given a set of fork and knife to cut up the meaty rib which is very tender (just like dining in a western restaurant). Every one of us loves it.

Zhonghua Restaurant is an excellent dinning place for delicious food especially the Peking duck and Spareribs. The dinner cost around RM140. As most of you would know, there is also a restaurant in Cititel Hotel that goes with the similar name. I am not sure about their ties however these two restaurants serve slightly different cuisines respectively as mentioned in my older post.

Penang Hokkien Dishes

Posted by: CK Lam    in Hokkien

There are only a few restaurants serving Hokkien dishes in Penang and one of the place is Sin Lean Heang located in Goh Tiau Lor (5th Street) – near McCallum flats . This place have been around for a long time. It was fully packed with customers at lunch time and we waited almost an hour for our food.
We had the recommended dishes like bak kee th’ng, stir fried tau kua with leeks and big size prawns, fried oyster noodle (char oh mee), fried beehoon and oyster omelette (oh chien).

The first dish was the Bak Kee Soup – meatballs that are dip fried coated with cornstarch and cooked in a starchy soup with cabbage. The meat is very smooth.

Fried beehoon and oyster mee…. with plentiful ingredients.

Big plate of fried oh chien..

Kailan stir fried with salted fish (kiam hu)…very tasty.

Five Spice Tau Kua stir fried with big size prawns and leeks (suan nah).

This very satisfying lunch with chinese tea cost RM95.00. Will definitely come back again for another bite in the near future!

JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur located in Jalan Bukit Bintang is within walking distance to a lot of shopping malls, restaurants and other entertainment outlets. There are many public transportation around – the monorail station is only 10-minutes walk from the hotel.
We stayed there several times in the past years. They provide very detail and excellent services. Even our car was given a free wash each morning during our stay.
