For a light meal when in Penang, head over to Yik Kheng Kee coffee shop on Kimberley Street in Penang. The owners, Ong Khye Jim (full blooded Hainanese) and his wife have been selling this unique humble stir-fried noodle dish for over three decades!

The preparation of the noodle has since changed. He used to fry the noodle over charcoal fire, but now uses gas fire to cater the demand of his impatient customers. Nevertheless, it didn’t stop regulars from keep coming back. The place is especially packed during lunch hour.

d’Tandoor Restaurant has recently opened in Penang. Its location in Precinct 10, showcase a concept that is modern with inviting gold and black interior and simple Indian decorations. The restaurant which is the chain of the D’Tandoor International Group of Restaurant serves Mughlai dishes.

The Mughlai cooking of the Indian sub-continent uses more natural ingredients. The extensive menu features many tempting options. We are torn between the curries, specialties, vegetarian dishes, relishes and accompaniments besides naans, rice dishes and desserts. We begin the meal with complimentary thin crispy papadum with smothery mint yogurt.

43 Cafe under the hands of proprietor cum cook Jacgy Chan and his family has a following of customers with a simple menu of homemade oven-grilled pork burgers. He has built the cafe with outdoor seating in a relaxing atmosphere at his homely hideaway at Jalan Sungai Dua, Penang.

The owner pride himself on making his pork patty with love as revealed in their tagline,  ’cook wat we love and love wat we cook’.  The quality and freshness of the food is a priority, with only a certain amount of patties made daily. The pork patty is approximately 90gms and made without the usage of MSG.

Penang is left with a handful of places serving simple breakfast of local coffee, toasts as well as hearty nasi kandar. One such place is Kedai Kopi Toon Leong, an old-style kopitiam located in a heritage shop house at the corner of Transfer Road and Argyll Road.

Taiwan Foods is located in Double 33 Kopitiam, a corner shop lot along Jalan Aziz Ibrahim, with the Queensbay Mall just a stone’s throw away. This place is perfect for a simple quick lunch. The menu is pretty straight forward, serving mostly rice dishes and noodle dishes with several types of braised meat.

Whenever we are near the area, we would drop by for a meal in this stall, which is on the same row with the Kampar Fish Jelly Restaurant.

I recently discovered the tempting taste of spices at Passions of Kerala. There are currently two outlets in Penang – one in Gelugor, and the other in New World Park.

The menu in the New World Park outlet consists of banana leaf rice served with an assortment of vegetable dishes as well as other popular curries and fried chicken, squid and fish.

Kim Tavern is a newly opened cafe in the vicinity of Sunway Carnival Mall, Butterworth which serves meals and light snack throughout the day. A small group of Penang Food Bloggers with Taufuloh from Kuala Lumpur paid a visit to the place recently. It’s the first visit for all of us as it has opened its door less than two weeks ago. This cafe with casual settings is the second branch for proprietor Andy with the first one in Megamall. The upcoming branch in Kulim Industrial Park is expected to be open in this month.

After settling down comfortably in the cafe with orange, black and white color scheme Andy introduces to us the many varieties of food in the menu.

One of the popular and convenient eating places in Gurney Drive is at the Gurney Drive Hawker Center beside the roundabout. This place mostly patronized by tourist and also by the locals offers variety of Penang hawker food. My favorite food at this hawker center is the Yau Yue Ong Choy (cuttlefish convolvulus) which is also known as Ju Hoo Eng Chai in Hokkien and also the blanched cockles.
