It is easy finding sandwiches but difficult to find healthy ones put together with care. Recently I got to know Sandwhich, which just opened its first outlet in I-Avenue, Penang.

“This outlet is committed to wellness. Premium grade ingredient of antibiotic free enzyme chicken, pork, fresh tuna and Omega eggs are the choices of fillings. To create healthy and delicious foods, the fresh ingredients are roast and steam except for the pan-fried egg,” explains T.W. Fong.

The sandwhiches are made with four types of baked breads: choose from olive ciabatta, wholemeal sandwich loaf, croissant and sesame wholemeal bun. A popular choice is the aromatic ciabatta which has a bit more bite.

Happy Duan Wu Festival to everyone!

The Duan Wu festival is celebrated on every 5th day of the 5th month, and it falls on June 23 this year. During this festival, many will be busy preparing the chang (glutinous rice dumpling), and with many people buying them.

In Penang the chang is sold commercially all year round in a number of places, and one such place is Cintra Food Corner. For generations, the Lor’s family has been dishing out the chang for customers to dine-in and take-away. Once located at the road side of the bustling Cintra Street, owner Lor Onn Kee has since shifted the business to a nearby shop house in 2006.

Penang Plaza in Burma Road has been given a new lease of life with the opening of the Hei Yeong Seng Chinese Restaurant. Also known as Noble Season Chinese Restaurant, it is a subsidiary of the Chinese Recreation Club Restaurant. Its cream-coloured table cloths and simple decor give it a bright and cheery ambience. There is an aquarium at one side of the restaurant that is filled with thriving fish of all kinds. There is also a mini-stage at the rear to cater for mass banquets and company functions.

Its menu is a selection of seafood and meat dishes, as well as noodles and desserts. The steamed chicken is garnished with plenty of spring onions. Prepared with Chinese wine and wolfberries, the chicken can be enjoy on its own, or with some pounded ginger.

First Famous Restaurant in the narrow Lorong Susu is one of the well known places in Penang for its good variety of roast meat particularly it’s Pei Pa Duck. My family does frequent this place for its different selection of roast besides those from Sky & Star Cafe.

Euro Deli, a landmark brand which has been in our shores since 1991 had recently held a launching event at their Damansara Kim restaurant after undergoing some renovation. The outlet, now occupying two shoplots has a relaxed dining ambiance. On top of that, there is also a section selling its signature products such as sausages, cold cutlets and other products.

***The restaurant has since closed down.

Many of you would definitely be familiar with Hot Wok! The name is associated with the abundant of Nyonya food coupled with beautiful decorations and authentic Peranakan ambiance.

Customers who have frequented the restaurant in Penang knows that Hot Wok Nyonya & Local Cuisine has established itself as the premier restaurant in serving authentic Peranakan or commonly known as Nyonya food from its earlier years in Gurney Plaza and later shifted to Tanjung Tokong. Now they still continue serving their customers in a double storey pre-war house along Jalan Burma, near to the many food eateries of Nagore Road and New World Park.

Heavenly Chinese Roast Meat can be found at Sky and Star in Penang.

One of my favorite stall would be the one located on the ground floor of Sky Hotel on Chulia Street which is known for its high number of budget hotels and small cafes. You could easily spot  this blue-ish building with the stall ‘WAI KEE’ right in the front entrance which is a few doors down from Ecco Cafe.

Here you will find delicious assorted roast meat. Ordering comes in individual servings or in individual plate with an assortment of your favourite choice of meat. The good stuff that I usually order is the Siew Yoke, Siew Cheong and Char Siew. The Siew Yoke has a very crispy skin and also the right amount of salty flavor.

I am sure many of you have eaten Penang Hokkien Mee as it is one of the favourite hawker food in Penang. However have you ever had pork knuckle (tu kar bak) with your steaming bowl of Hokkien Mee?  If not, then hop over to the stall located in Presgrave Street (Sah Tiau Lor – 3rd Street) which serves this tender pork knuckle meat. The tender meat is only sliced out from the drum when required to maintain its moist meaty texture.

This stall does have a varieties of other add-on (kae liau) ingredients such as intestines (hoon chiang), spare ribs, boiled pig skin, roast pork and fishball. Among my must-haves every time I pay a visit are the pork knuckle, intestines and pig skin!
