d’Tandoor Restaurant has recently opened in Penang. Its location in Precinct 10, showcase a concept that is modern with inviting gold and black interior and simple Indian decorations. The restaurant which is the chain of the D’Tandoor International Group of Restaurant serves Mughlai dishes.

The Mughlai cooking of the Indian sub-continent uses more natural ingredients. The extensive menu features many tempting options. We are torn between the curries, specialties, vegetarian dishes, relishes and accompaniments besides naans, rice dishes and desserts. We begin the meal with complimentary thin crispy papadum with smothery mint yogurt.

In Penang there are many alleys and walking down a right one gives the opportunity of finding delicious street food. Located in a short alley on Hutton Lane, Penang is a cosy stall that wowed customers with its simple breakfast menu and nasi dalca.

We popped into the stall owned by M.M. Abdul Jaafar which has been operating before 1957.

Taiwan Foods is located in Double 33 Kopitiam, a corner shop lot along Jalan Aziz Ibrahim, with the Queensbay Mall just a stone’s throw away. This place is perfect for a simple quick lunch. The menu is pretty straight forward, serving mostly rice dishes and noodle dishes with several types of braised meat.

Whenever we are near the area, we would drop by for a meal in this stall, which is on the same row with the Kampar Fish Jelly Restaurant.

Hameediyah Restaurant, a century-old eating house established in 1907 is among one of the oldest restaurants in Penang. The restaurant with a yellow facade located on Campbell Street serves South Indian cuisine and is well known for its nasi kandar. Those who have tried the curry dishes in Hameediyah are hooked by its intricate flavors.

Having stood the test of time and firmly established its name in Penang, the owner has since embarked on the next stage with the opening of another outlet two doors away. The new outlet, Hameediyah Tandoori House is definitely a friendly neighborhood restaurant. It has moved away from the traditional look.

This new shop has a spacious and cleaner environment, with pleasant food presentation (only white plates are used), while still retaining the flavors of Hameediyah that many of us grew up with. This restaurant is fully air-conditioned, so diners need not sweat it out while dining.

Posted by: CK Lam    in Hawker, Jelutong, Penang, Porridge

We begin a weekend morning with a warm and filling bowl of oyster porridge, or better known orh moi. I was introduced to this oyster porridge at Perak Road in Jelutong. It is one of the local’s favorite choice of  breakfast. This stall starts selling early in the morning serving breakfast, right till lunch.

Being the only stall in the coffee shop, it draws in quite a crowd with the place packed with customers. Many were seen waiting for their take-away and others busy slurping down their porridge.

Chinese dumplings widely known in many countries as jiaozi, guoti and gyoza are also found in many restaurants and hawker stalls around Penang. One of the places that we do visit for the small bites is Pleasure Odyssey, a hawker stall in Northern Beach Cafe which is located in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. This stall focuses on homemade pan-fried dumplings, with little parcels of minced meat and diced vegetable.

We had different plates of dumplings. These meat pies stuffed with meat and vegetables were flavorsome. Fried in oil with a crispy skin, they were delicious eaten with the spicy ginger chili sauce, a concoction mixed just right, not overpowering. A plate of four pieces of piping hot meat pies cost RM5.

Ever tasted the delicacy Stinky Tofu (Chao Tofu) from Taiwan?

It was an amazing steamboat dinner we had on the weekend with some friends at Tang Steamboat & BBQ Restaurant in Rangoon Road, Penang. It is a different kind of steamboat whether when it comes to choices of food and soup.

Besides that, we got the chance tasting the famous Taiwanese specialty Chao Tofu.
