Penang is dotted with many restaurants, with some hidden unnoticed even though we often pass by it. One such place is Chin Bee Tea Restaurant. Located on Noordin Street, or commonly known as ‘Ji Tiau Lor’ among the Hokkiens here, this tea house is unique in its own way. This place is not all only about serving Chinese tea, but also serves appealing Chinese dishes.

One of their best dishes offered here is the Hainan Kampung Chicken. Dosed in the chef’s concoction of light soy sauce and oil, the chicken is tender and juicy. The condiment of fresh and fragrant chilli sauce blend with garlic and ginger is a must-have. I highly enjoyed the chicken with its natural sweetness flavor.

I was invited by Ken for dinner together with his friends from Tour2U at Restoran City Star in Taman Mayang, Petaling Jaya during my Kuala Lumpur trip. This double shop lot restaurant owned by Mr CM Wong has a nice and clean environment with one section of the restaurant air-conditioned.

Our meal consists of several recommended dishes by the owner. The first was the Charboiled Pure White Assam Fish. The fresh Fei Chow Yue at RM35 per kg was cooked in a slightly sourish and spicy soup which was kept warm under the charcoal fire.

Updated on November 2010 : All the hawker stalls have stopped operation.

During my last makan outing at 127 Food Court on Burma Road I was recommended to try out their chu char stall, Anson Park Seafood. It has been around for a few years but it was only recently that we went to try out the food. Most of the table was having their signature dish of Curry Fish Head and the Nam Yue Bak and I was enticed by the looks of.

This Curry Fish Head is the milk-based curry rather than the usual santan (coconut milk). The curry is not really spicy yet very flavorful with lots of lady fingers, tomatoes, onions and mint leaves, served hot in a claypot. The taste of the curry is more towards Indian Curry with the usage of curry leaves.

Penang Food – Klang Bak Kut Teh

Posted by: CK Lam    in Bah Kut Teh, Georgetown, Hawker, Penang

Looking back at the post, it seems like it has been a while since I blogged about Bak Kut Teh in Penang. I was recommended to try out a Bak Kut Teh stall in the folds of Jalan Terengganu recently. It was indeed a different style from the Penang local version. It is the Klang Bak Kut Teh!

Recently, a few food bloggers and I were given a warm welcome into Yishensu Restaurant located in 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya. This restaurant with an inviting and pleasant ambiance serves many choices of wholesome and hearty vegetarian dishes, noodles and sweets. It is very popular with shoppers and also the residence living around the area.

As a newbie to an area, I would usually choose to patronize the restaurant that is recommended by word of mouth or through the blogs. This time around I chose the Cia Xiang Seafood Restaurant in Bukit Tambun for our family weekend makan outing. This restaurant is nearby the Bukit Tambun Interchange of the North South Highway and the area is dotted with a lot of seafood restaurants, with each close by.

Their signature dish is the Claypot Crab Rice. We were recommended to have two crabs for the claypot. We waited for around twenty minutes for our order.

I am sure many of you have eaten Penang Hokkien Mee as it is one of the favourite hawker food in Penang. However have you ever had pork knuckle (tu kar bak) with your steaming bowl of Hokkien Mee?  If not, then hop over to the stall located in Presgrave Street (Sah Tiau Lor – 3rd Street) which serves this tender pork knuckle meat. The tender meat is only sliced out from the drum when required to maintain its moist meaty texture.

This stall does have a varieties of other add-on (kae liau) ingredients such as intestines (hoon chiang), spare ribs, boiled pig skin, roast pork and fishball. Among my must-haves every time I pay a visit are the pork knuckle, intestines and pig skin!

Our family has always been a fan of Korean Food, especially the barbeque cuisines. Complemented with the kimchi, the dishes is definitely a nice change from the Chinese dishes we are accustomed to on the normal days.

Since it was a public holiday on the Merdeka Day, we decided to cross over to the mainland to visit the newly opened Jusco Bandar Perda in Bukit Mertajam, Penang on our food hunt. This time around, we decided to visit Che Go Korean BBQ Restaurant.  Getting there was the easy part but the jam upon entering the complex was deafening. After finding a car park and with growling tummies, we quickly find our way to the restaurant.

Most of the eateries were packed, and a line of customers were waiting for tables. We finally got ours at a nice little corner after waiting for twenty minutes. The staffs were way too busy to recommend their specialities, so we just flicked upon the rather large-size menu and took our pick ourselves.

There are a few sets of bbq  that customers can take advantage of ranging from RM78 to RM168.  A set is inclusive of a few dishes and is much cheaper compare to ordering the dishes individually.  We had the spare ribs bbq set which are provided with six plates of appetizers which is refillable – kimchi, cucumber, long beans, kacang botol, brinjal and bayam leaves plus the rest of the dishes.

The dishes that this spare rib bbq set comprises looked simply delicious and the real deal didn’t disappoint.

Over at this restaurant and similarly in many Korean joints, the food is cook on a metal plate over a gas cooker located at the center of the table by the waiter. We had the pleasure to sit back and watch the food being cooked and at the same time enjoying ourselves eating the tastefully cooked marinated beef.

The is the fried Korean Seafood Pancake. A really simple dish of egg with vegetables and seafood but the combination turns out to be delicious.

P1090263

Another dish was the Hot Pot Chicken with Bipim Bab (a version of claypot rice). Our family found the taste of this dish rather bland. Then came the Korean Chicken Ginseng Soup. The chicken was stuffed with glutinous rice, Chinese chestnut and boiled with ginseng strands and red dates. The taste was very herbalist and some might not be accustomed to these strong ginseng smell.

P1090265P1090322

Special Korean Rice Cake. The rice cake which is a bit chewy is stir fried in a slightly spicy and sweet chili sauce with large prawns together with  pieces of squid and fish cake. This dish is unusual and it was our favourite.

P1090315

Finally, the Seaweed Soup with Dumpling. Nothing much to shout about for this dish, just a few dumplings in a simple Miso Soup (do Koreans have Miso Soup anyway?). The dumplings were quite thick-skinned, literally. Just a nice compliment for the meal as we already had the Ginseng Chicken soup.

This bbq set does not include complimentary fruits and desserts as compare to other outlets that we had patronized previously.

On the bright side, the cold green tea that we had with this delicious and fuss-free dinner is refillable at RM2 per glass. We found most of the dishes sufficient in taste and hence not too much additional sauces is required.

A very satisfied mom with an even satisfied son. :D

My hubby still prefer the Korea Palace BBQ Restaurant in Tanjong Tokong because the appetizers are marinated much tastier and they uses charcoal instead of gas. He favour charcoal as it really enhances the taste of the meat as compared to gas which is more likened to pan-fry style.

Tasty Restaurant ???, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in uncategorized

***The restaurant has since closed down.

Fancy eating delicious and tasty food? Then head over to Tasty Restaurant for fantastic roast meat – siu mei (??). This clean shoplot situated along Anson Road is right beside the coffeeshop selling the famous duck meat koay teow th’ng.
The chef cum owner who run this place has over 10 years of experience, hails from Ipoh. He also prepares other various dishes of savoury dumplings, Siu Lon Pau and porridge. Additional dishes are added to the menu on Sunday.
Our orders were pei pah arp, siew yok and siew pai kut (roast spare ribs). All the roast meat are tender, juicy and succulent. The minimum order for the pei pah arp is a quarter portion. This is reasonable unlike other stalls that only sells minimum of half a duck.

The three layer siew yok with crispy skin.

The roast spare ribs (which are rarely sold in Penang) were very tasty and tender enough to be removed from the bone easily. We had the dried noodle which is very springy and tasted good with bit of oil (pork lard) and sauce.

A bamboo basket of steaming hot Siu Lon Pau is best eaten with strips of ginger dipped in vinegar. You get to eat it here at a fraction of a price compare to some outlets.

Highly recommended is this refreshing cold dessert – Iced Mango Sago. The mango is blended with crushed ice and served with chunky pieces of mango and generous amount of sago. The sweetness was just right. There are also other desserts of soya bean and yee mai foo chok.

This is an ideal place to be for those who wishes to have a full meal, snack or just a dessert. Surprisingly this outlet is Wifi enabled. Glad to have found this place and definitely will drop by for more.
