*** Updated July 2013 – This Bak Moi stall has since shifted into Hon Kei Food Corner, located a few shops down the road

Ho Ping in Penang is arguably a good place to head for hawker food. This double-storey coffee shop located at the junction of Penang Road and Kampung Malabar is popular with the locals and also tourists staying at the nearby hotels.

The coffee shop has rented the space to several hawkers. One popular stall is the bak moi stall serving warming, comforting bak moi (pork porridge). There is no signboard to indicate the stall which is run by Y.C. Lai, owner of this third generation hawker food business.

Penang’s latest eatery serving giant river prawn is House of Udang Galah (HUG). Located on Hutton Lane, the restaurant housed in two renovated heritage shop houses offers fresh udang galah (giant river prawn) cooked in many different ways. Italian, Western, Malay, Indian and Chinese method of cooking is offered. The prawns are cut into halves and cooked with the head and shell intact.

One of HUG specialties is the Udang Galah in Chef Specialty Lime Sauce. The prawns steamed with garlic, chilli and ginger, made up a perky and appetising dish. Garnished with Chinese parsley, the dish costs a little fortune at RM109 (730g at RM15/100g).

Located on Jalan Bawasah directly behind the iconic Penang Plaza, diners begin filling One Corner Café as early as eight in the morning to savor the Super Hokkien Mee. The proprietor has been dishing out this noodle for decades, and this place remains a favorite for many.

The Cinnamon at Hotel Penaga has revamped their menu under the helm of its new executive chef Haron Muzaffar Abdul Aziz. The new menu combined interesting and innovative changes to some traditional cuisine. We stopped by early before the lunch crowd to sample several offerings from the lunch and dinner menu.

To bring out its best flavor, chef Haron added new ingredients and spices to the dishes. Appetizer is one dish that starts a meal. There are a few appetizers on the menu; Kim Chee style salad with duck, Thai style salad with peppered squid and the gado-gado.

The Kim Chee salad prepared with Chinese cabbage, carrot, daikon, spring onions and sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds has the flavour of the Korean style pickled cabbage. It is a beautiful combination, however I would prefer it with a more distinctive spicy kim chee flavor.

Da Ban Chinese Restaurant is renowned for serving Szechuan cuisine as well as steamboat. Its location in Jalan Zainal Abidin, stuck between Jalan Macalister and Burma Road, has a huge gold and black signboard on its facade.

A man-made bridge after the main entrance leads us into several dining areas. This fairly large air-conditioned restaurant has its interior decorated with Chinese furniture and bamboo plants.

Penang Plaza in Burma Road has been given a new lease of life with the opening of the Hei Yeong Seng Chinese Restaurant. Also known as Noble Season Chinese Restaurant, it is a subsidiary of the Chinese Recreation Club Restaurant. Its cream-coloured table cloths and simple decor give it a bright and cheery ambience. There is an aquarium at one side of the restaurant that is filled with thriving fish of all kinds. There is also a mini-stage at the rear to cater for mass banquets and company functions.

Its menu is a selection of seafood and meat dishes, as well as noodles and desserts. The steamed chicken is garnished with plenty of spring onions. Prepared with Chinese wine and wolfberries, the chicken can be enjoy on its own, or with some pounded ginger.

Fancy some Hainanese cuisine in Penang? Chances are the choices are not aplenty as Hainanese cooks are few to come by and the younger generation is not keen on learning the trade.

But you can make your way to Yeng Keng Cafe & Bar in Yeng Keng Hotel, a heritage boutique hotel on Chulia Street at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town. In addition to Western cuisine, Yeng Keng Café & Bar came out with a selection of classic Hainanese dishes.

Kang Beef House is the place for all things beef, and it is the ideal place to explore if you are a beef lover. The beef is served in a variety of ways, be it soup noodles, stir-fried dishes or steamboat. We made several visits to Kang Beef House since its opening last year.

The most common dish here is the bowl of Beef Koay Teow, priced at RM6, RM8, RM10, RM12 and RM15.  It comes with a light broth, drawing flavor from an assortment of beef parts, including beef slices, meat balls, brisket and stomach. We enjoyed slurping the smooth koay teow along with the tasty soup.

Public Cafe is just another neighborhood coffee shop in the pleasant surroundings of Gurney Drive. Located next to the famed Song River Cafe, this coffee shop is a favorite spot for me as it has a stall that serves up both delicious yet reasonable seafood noodles and porridge.

Take a pick from the striking mix of ingredients and several types of noodles.  The prices varies according to the seafood ingredients, with pawns, crabs, paddy frogs (tin kai/chui kay) and varieties of fish.

Oyster Porridge in Perak Road, Penang

Posted by: CK Lam    in Hawker, Jelutong, Penang, Porridge

We begin a weekend morning with a warm and filling bowl of oyster porridge, or better known orh moi. I was introduced to this oyster porridge at Perak Road in Jelutong. It is one of the local’s favorite choice of  breakfast. This stall starts selling early in the morning serving breakfast, right till lunch.

Being the only stall in the coffee shop, it draws in quite a crowd with the place packed with customers. Many were seen waiting for their take-away and others busy slurping down their porridge.

Near to the intersection of Campbell Street and Carnavon Street in Penang, is the Campbell Street Market. This corner market building with a brick facade still maintained its ornate cast iron columns and brackets. It has a poultry section, seafood and meat sellers.

In the morning especially during weekends, this wet market is very crowded. Busy atmosphere prevails by the stalls selling vegetables and hawkers pedaling their food along one side of the market building.
