My enthusiasm for learning about wine was given a boost when I was invited to the Malaysia Wine Fiesta 2012. The event organized by The Straits Wine Company (of the Billion Frontier Group of Companies) was held at Precinct 10, located at Tanjung Tokong, Penang. More than 400 wine enthusiasts turned up at the event.

One of the newest bakeries in town is FourSeason Bakery. Located in Straits Quay Penang, this neighborhood bakery offers freshly baked breads and a wide variety of other delicious cakes and pastries to fill your hunger cravings. It is also an ideal place for a light lunch or tea.

Tanjung  Tokong Malay Village, which was once a sleepy “kampung” in the 60s and 70s, has grown into a suburb with rows of flats, overshadowing what is left of the kampung houses. Gone are the seafronts directly opposite the village where the natural sand split and mangrove trees grew. The village now faces vast reclaimed land and its sea view is blocked by modern concrete houses and high rise towers.

Despite the modernisation, the residents have maintained the uniqueness of Malaysian culture — the evening food bazaar, or commonly known as “pasar malam”. The Tanjung Tokong night market operates every Saturday evening and is one of the designated Ramadan food bazaars.

The Sea Pearl Lagoon Cafe which is famous for its seafood is situated next to the Tua Pek Kong Temple in Tanjung Tokong with a beautiful seaside view overlooking the North Channel. I went there several times with my family and friends for lunch and dinner.

The seafood is cooked in very simple method, with their signature dish of coal-baked crabs and salt-baked prawns. I’ve eaten baked crabs in Teluk Kumbar Seafood, Crab Village Restaurant and Khuntai Restaurant, but I find this place produces the best baked crabs. The restaurant owner relies on these two signature dishes to pull in the customers.

Straight to the delicious food!

My mouth started watering with the aroma of the baked prawns filling the air. The salt-baked prawns with the smoky taste have us sucking and licking the shell.

Updated on June 2010 : The restaurant has stopped operation.

Penang has been renowned for its ever-famous hawker & street food for a long time. However, in recent years, there have been a growing number of international restaurants popping out, especially in the regions of Tanjung Bungah and Tanjung Tokong. I was lucky enough to have tried the Swiss, Bulgarian, German, Japanese and Korean food around these area and in Georgetown.

Yesterday, while on our usual family food trips, we stumbled upon Shenanigans, the new Irish Pub & Restaurant along Jalan Tanjung Tokong with its traditional green and splendor. We pop in for a visit but to our surprise, they were holding an opening function. The Manager told us that the ala carte menu is only available on a much later date and he invited us to join in the function with free flow of beer and finger food.
