Sushi Tei, the international Japanese Sushi Restaurant Chain which originates from Singapore is now opened in Penang. Located in Gurney Plaza, the dining place with a touch of Japanese interior has a great sea view. The signature open-kitchen concept is also seen in this outlet.
The menu offers one dish meal, ramen, sushi, sashimi, tempura, rolls and grill dishes. I adore the sashimi with four different types of raw fish, garnished with lemon slices. The fresh yellow-tail, salmon and butterfish goes well with wasabi but the marbled tuna belly is best eaten on its own. This highly prized fish is also available in a single plate with five thick pieces per order.

Public Cafe is just another neighborhood coffee shop in the pleasant surroundings of Gurney Drive. Located next to the famed Song River Cafe, this coffee shop is a favorite spot for me as it has a stall that serves up both delicious yet reasonable seafood noodles and porridge.
Take a pick from the striking mix of ingredients and several types of noodles. The prices varies according to the seafood ingredients, with pawns, crabs, paddy frogs (tin kai/chui kay) and varieties of fish.

Taiwan Foods is located in Double 33 Kopitiam, a corner shop lot along Jalan Aziz Ibrahim, with the Queensbay Mall just a stone’s throw away. This place is perfect for a simple quick lunch. The menu is pretty straight forward, serving mostly rice dishes and noodle dishes with several types of braised meat.
Whenever we are near the area, we would drop by for a meal in this stall, which is on the same row with the Kampar Fish Jelly Restaurant.

During the weekend I enjoyed a wonderful lunch with friends in the newly opened Hainanese Delights Restaurant in Penang. This place is located in the low rise 1926 Heritage Hotel on Burma Road, and emerges as the newest addition to the number of Hainanese restaurant in town. This restaurant is operated by a Hainanese, while the food is cooked by a Hainanese chef too. The menu of this restaurant brings a selection of Hainanese specialties and some western-style dishes.

The nostalgic Hainanese cuisine, Macaroni Pie…

Last week I met up with Mr Akihiko Hijioka, Deputy Managing Director of Sushi Kin Sdn Bhd , member of the Texchem group again at Miraku Japanese Restaurant in G Hotel to try out their newly launched September Autumn promotion of Salmon & Bonito Tuna. Also present was their Chief Executive Chef /Director Susumu Sakamaki.
This time around I get to discover the various preparations of the Bonito Tuna and the Salmon. The Bonito (also known as skipjack tuna) is a seawater fish belonging to the mackerel family with a rich red color and firm texture. We began our dinner with the delightful SP Sashimi Moriawase consisting of an assortment of both fish which was sliced to just the right thickness.

Peanut Butter !!! There are many varieties of peanut butter. I have been using peanut butter as a spreader since ……can’t even remember when. I loved the Skippy creamy ones although I sometimes have the extra chunky version too. Another favourite of mine is Smucker’s black current and strawberry. They make a tasty spread for bread as well as cream cracker.

Besides making peanut butter toast at home, my hubby and myself like to eat those sold at Eng Loh coffee shop located at Church Street. The bread is known as Taiwan Roti and the thick slice is sold for RM3.50. The main ingredients is margarine, peanut butter and crushed peanuts. The bread is the ordinary fresh white bread which is sliced into very thick pieces. It is toasted with a layer of margarine. Peanut butter is then spread on to the melted margarine with crushed peanuts sprinkled on top.
The warm crusty bread and the stickiness of the peanut butter is delicious. On the first bite, it tends to stick to the gums…. and glue the jaws together for few seconds.

And not forgetting a hot cup of kopi-o kau that goes hand in hand with the toast. Super breakfast
